Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Seif Rashid, inaugurated a building to accommodate state-of-the art operating theatre at the Mtowisa Health Centre in Sumbawanga district, Rukwa region at the climax of the national White Ribbon Day celebrations.
The theatre has been constructed by the Wazazi na Mwana programme which is being jointly implemented by Plan International, Africare and Jhpiego in both Rukwa and Mwanza regions with financial support from the Government of Canada and Plan International.
The programme is being implemented through an integrated approach involving community and facility-based Maternal, Newborn and Child Health-MNCH programming, supporting the Government of Tanzania to implement multiple strategies addressing MDGs 4 and 5-the main objective being to reduce maternal, neonatal and child mortality amongst underserved populations in Tanzania.
The operating theater has cost a total of USD 317,500 to construct, for the building, provision of electricity and water supply for the operating theater. To supplement the equipment and supplies already present at Mtowisa, Wazazi na Mwana will be providing additional items including patient stretcher, aenesthesia stool, heavy duty suction machine, cesarean section sets, theater gowns and surgeon boots, baby weighing scale, and resuscitator masks for adults and children, among other necessary accompanying items.
As part of support to the facility, staff from the Mtowisa Health Centre will also be provided with training on Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care(CEmONC) in order to equip them with skills to perform cesarean sections for safe delivery of babies.
