The Court’s quarter sessions started today, with the Taxation ruling of Alcon International Limited (Appellant) versus the Standard Chartered Bank Uganda and Others (Respondents). 

In the Ruling, the Court taxed a bill of costs Total to $22,884 to be paid by the Respondents to the Appellant as it was awarded in the Judgement of the case as the costs incurred by the Appellant during the hearing process of the Appeal.  

The Ruling was delivered by the Deputy Registrar East African Court Of Justice, Her Worship Ms. Geraldine Umugwaneza. 

During this quarter a total of 25 matters will be handled of which 6 are in the Appellate Division and 19 in the First Instance Division. The Appellate Division will have 1 Taxation, 1 hearing, 2 scheduling conferences, and 2 Judgements and the First Instance Division will have 14 hearings, 4 scheduling conferences and 1 Judgement. All matters will be in open Court. 

All the matters will come before the Honourable Judges of both the Appellate and First Instance Divisions.

The East African Court of Justice (EACJ or ‘the Court’), is one of the organs of the East African Community established under Article 9 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community. Established in November 2001, the Court’s major responsibility is to ensure the adherence to law in the interpretation and application of and compliance with the EAC Treaty.

Arusha is the temporary seat of the Court until the Summit determines its permanent seat. The High Courts of the Partner States serve as sub-registries.
