The East African Community Headquarters today hosted a fruitful roundtable discussion with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) on the topic: Regional Trade in East Africa.
The one-day roundtable discussion was aimed at exploring how IFAD can engage with EAC and its Partners to, among others, support food trade within the East African Common Market under the EAC Food Security Action Plan; develop agriculture value chain and cross border trade, as well as accelerate expansion of processing and value addition especially of perishable products in the region.
The roundtable discussion saw Senior Officers from the EAC Secretariat make exhaustive presentations in areas of Trade and Customs, and EAC Food Security Action Plan. At the roundtable discussion, the EAC Secretariat called for support in improving and developing the dry lands of EAC and re- orientation of investment in Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries sectors to support market driven systems.
Present at the roundtable discussion were IFAD Executive Board Representative Mr. Yaya O. Olaniran leading a 14-man Executive Board Members and staff; Ag. EAC Director of Productive Sector Mr. Moses Marwa; the Executive Secretary of Kilimo Trust, Prof. Nuhu Hatibu; and Director of Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA), Ms. Jacqueline Mkindi.
