THE BEAT FESTIVAL “Unplugged” at a NEW VENUE

This edition is dedicated to the singer-songwriter tradition of acoustic guitar and vocals. The event features a long list of performers and we break the rules here and there by replacing the guitar with a traditional Gogo bowed fiddle called the Zeze. Get ready to lounge, listen and enjoy a wide range of unplugged performances.

Vitalis Maembe – 18.00
Vitali Maembe is a singersongwriter based in Bagamoyo, where he completed his music studies at the Bagamoyo School of Arts. He is known for his socially conscious song writing which comments on daily life in Tanzania. He has a way of captivating his audience with his socio-political and powerful lyrics both live but also through his studio album “Bagamoyo”.

Lea and Grace – 18.45
Grace and Lea are Gogo musicians from the Zawose family. They are known for their work with Msafiri Zawoze, son of the esteemed late Hukwe Zawose who was signed to Peter Gabriels record label ‘Real World’. When performing with Msafiri, Lea and Grace will usually play “hour-glass” shaped drums, which are traditionally played by women. Tonight they will be performing Zeze and Marimba which are traditionally only performed by men.

Jim Kroft – 19.30
Jim Kroft is an eclectic singer-songwriter originally from the UK, but based in Berlin who has embarked on an artistic and physical journey where he fuses music, photography and film with travel. Journey #1 took him to China and Journey #2 has brought him to East Africa where he has immersed himself in the local culture through his art. It is a pleasure to host him at this special edition of THE BEAT, which in fact might have been born through his presence.

Samwel Hokororo – 20.15
Samuel Hokororo, was born in 1990 in Temeke, Dar es Salaam. He started singing when he was eight years old, at school, at home and in the church choir. In 2006 he went to the Dogodogo center – a center for street children – and received training in theatre, dance and music. It was there that he learned to play the guitar. Samuel was an excellent student and since he left the Dogodogo center in 2008 he has been working full time with music.

Mzungu Kichaa – 21.00
Mzungu Kichaa plays guitar and sings in Swahili and English. Debuting in 2009 with his album Tuko Pamoja, Mzungu Kichaa and his band Bongo Beat have created a unique style of Congolese inspired Bongo Flava. For this unplugged edition he will be performing his songs accompanied only by his acoustic guitar.

ASHIMBA – 21.45
Ashimba is a talented singer and songwriter. He has a passion for intricate and complex compositions. His sound borrows from the West African griot traditions fused with his own unique style of guitar playing and traditional Tanzanian music.

ABOUT THE BEAT: The Beat is a monthly festival that takes place on the first Friday of the month, showcasing the best live music from Tanzania and abroad. The festival is hosted by Mzungu Kichaa and is powered by: Caravan Records, and Goethe Institut Tanzania.
