AngloGold Ashanti Executive Vice President Social and Sustainable Development Mr David Noko has visited Geita Gold Mine where he is currently on tour to see different community projects supported by the company.Mr. Noko is a member of AngloGold Ashanti Executive Committee (Excom). His portfolio as Executive Vice President Sustainable Development comprises the disciplines of Safety, Health, Environment, Social and Community Affairs, Human Rights and Global Security, and Government Relations.

Speaking to the paddy farmers in Saragulwa village a project which is supported by GGM in collaboration with Geita Town Council, Mr Noko said he was very satisfied by the cooperation and efforts shown by the farmers to adopt to the new technology introduced to them

“The efforts you have shown us today really give us the confidence to start thinking of going to another phase of implementing these projects. It is our aim to be good corporate citizens where we operate, that the societies which surround our operations must be better off for us working here” He said.
Village Leader from Saragulwa community in Geita makes a presentation to Mr David Noko on how the Paddy project has resulted into major farming revolution in their community. Mr Noko visited a paddy project in Saragulwa Village in Geita, the project is supported by GGM in collaboration with Geita Councils.

Saragulwa community members working on their paddy farm using new farming technology. Before the new technology, farmers were used to harvest a total of 9-12 bags of paddy per acre. Today 1 acre provides approximately 28 bags…what a revolution…the harvest has gone beyond double!!!
Started with a group of only 200 individuals toward this project, today there is over 700 members who have joined in and are using the introduced modern methods and technology.

Paddy farming in Saragulwa, is one of the project supported by the Geita Economic development Programme (GEDP) in a GEITA Region -owned development program established to support better coordination between Agricultural value chain development initiatives, enhance and improve the understanding of agricultural market systems, improve productivity and market access for micro, small and medium enterprises, maximise the impact of programmes, and more effectively contribute to reducing poverty in Geita region. Other projects under GEDP includes;
Tailoring/Embroidery/Knitting project
This project will involve the procurement and provision of machines, training on embroiderly skills, business management and linking the beneficiaries to the potential markets within and outside Geita. The aim of this project is to empower women in tailoring, embroiderly and knitting activities in order to increase their income.
 
Brick Making Project
The brick making project is another project in the SMEs project portfolio. This project involved purchase of modern brick machines (Hydra-form Machines), training youths on modern brick making skills and linking them to the potential markets within and outside Geita. The aim of this project is to empower youths in self-employment activities and reduce unemployment among youths in Geita.

Welding & Fabrication Project .
This is the third project in the SMEs project portfolio. The welding and Fabrication project involves provision of welding machines and accessories, training youths in welding and fabrication skills and business management. The aim of this project is to expand self-employment opportunities for youths through vocational activities
