Another great edition of Sauti za Busara has just ended and this year, the world known music festival 100%
live, has seen the debut on its stage of Tanzanian songstress Grace Matata.
The Afro Soul/Jazz singer and songwriter dedicated her music career to develop her distinctive brand as
live performer and this persistence was recognized by Festival Manager – Journey Ramadhan, as one of the
criteria that has been used to select Grace among the 40+ performers of this year’s edition of the Zanzibar
based festival.
The Tanzanian act was booked by the organizers to perform two gigs. On Saturday night Grace entertained
a very lively crowd at the Amphitheater stage. A good portion of the attending crown took the foot of the
stage to dance along the tunes and lyrics of Grace’s feel good music.
Grace hits such as “Uwe Wangu”,
“Utanifaa” were perfectly executed by the band which included: Norman Bikaka (solo guitar), Wilfred
Masanja (bass), Frank Nzobaza (drums) and Jonas Mwakibinga (keyboard). “One more song” was
enthusiastically and repeatedly requested by the crowd at the end of her set.
The following day, Grace and her band amused a much more Zanzibari crowd at the famous Forodhani
Gardens where the organizers of Busara have set a free stage for the duration of the festival. A just less
than an hour set, took the audience into a soulful tour of Swahili melodies and stories.
Grace attendance at the Sauti za Busara was completed with her participation as a panelist at the Mover
& Shakers forum held on Sunday at the Monsoon Restaurant.
