The British Council has recently embarked on an EU funded project to support the Association of
Tanzania Employers (ATE) in improving the participation of the private sector in Vocational
Education and Training (VET). The project is designed to support the expansion of private sector
engagement and cooperation with the public sector to aid the Technical and Vocational Education
and Training (TVET) reform process and make VET more demand-driven and employer-led.

As part of the intervention, the British Council held a Consultative Workshop on 29th July 2021,
bringing together key stakeholders from training colleges, National Council for Technical Education
(NACTE), Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA), public and private sector companies
to present key findings from the research and interviews carried out by independent consultants
and to discuss international models and interim recommendations.

Addressing the participants, the EU Head of Cooperation, Mr. Cedric Merel said “Central to
Tanzania development strategies, European Union will continue to work with all key stakeholders
to address key challenges for this sector. In addition, the European Union (EU) and United
Republic of Tanzania developed a seven years (2021 - 2027) Multiannual Indicative Programme for
the United Republic of Tanzania. One of the priority areas under the programme is Human Capital,
Employment, with an aspect to enhance employability and entrepreneurship through skills
development.”

Opening the event, Catherine Sinclair-Jones, Country Director of the British Council said “The
British Council is committed to working with partners to support employment and education
opportunities for people in Tanzania. We are delighted to have an opportunity to engage with the
diverse actors across the TVET sector through this consultative workshop to see how these
opportunities might be strengthened.”

As part of the project, the British Council will produce and publish a gap analysis and develop a
diagnostic tool for the Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) in the context of Tanzania and
international examples to assess the gaps in private sector engagement in Technical and
Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
