Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the tobacco sector by engaging in high-level discussions with Japan Tobacco International (JTI), a subsidiary to the Tanzania Cigarette Company Limited (TCC).
The meeting took place on 3rd October 2026, on the margins of the Al Alamein Africa Business Forum in El Alamein, in Egypt, whereby Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Gerald Mweli met with the Chief Executive Officer and Representative Director of JTI, Mr. Takehiko Tsutsui.
Representing H.E. Deogratius John Ndejembi, Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mr. Mweli emphasized the importance of sustaining production and ensuing profitable returns for tobacco farmers. The discussion further highlighted the longstanding partnership between Tanzania and JTI, focusing on modernization, value addition and competitiveness in global markets.
Other areas of discussions included technological innovations that JTI can provide for tobacco processing, market diversification, and programs for formers to ensure equitable participation in the value chain.
The meeting aligns with Tanzania’s broader agricultural policy direction under the Sixth Phase Government of the President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan which emphasizes on farmer empowerment through extension services, contract farming, cooperatives, technological adaptation and climate-smart practices. It also spearheads regional integration via the EAC, SADC and AfCFTA; as well as value addition to raw exports.
The meeting was also attended by Mr. Aristides Mbwasi, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Trade; Ambassador John Ulanga, Director of International Trade and Economic Diplomacy and Ambassador Thobias M. Makoba, Director of the Department of Strategy and Global Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation; and a representative of the Ministry of Finance, with the purpose to reflect the cross-sectoral significance of tobacco in Tanzania’s economy.
