Tanzanian to lead International Air Navigation Commission
By Saidi Yakubu, London

The Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation has appointed a Tanzanian Aeronautical Engineer Omari Rashid Nundu as President of its technical body, the Air Navigation Commission for the year 2008.

The Commission consists of distinguished experts nominated by ICAO Contracting States and appointed on a highly competitive basis by the ICAO Council to serve in the Commission for a period of three years.

The Commission is the technical source of all standards, rules and procedures for the design of aircraft, airports and aeronautical equipment; and for the safe conduct of international air transportation.

Omari Nundu who was born in Tanga 59 years ago triumphed against Carlos Cirilo of Brazil to serve in the top seat of the high profile international body as far as air transport is concerned.

Engineer Nundu’s journey to the Presidency of the Commission started in 2005 when the number of seats on the Commission was increased from 15 to 19 and he was nominated by Tanzanian Government to contest for the additional seat.
He began to serve in the Commission in 2006 and in the same year his colleagues in the Commission unanimously elected him to be their First Vice President for 2007.

It is not customary that the First Vice President becomes the next President and this has never happened before but on 14th December 2007 the Council of ICAO elected Engineer Nundu the President of the Commission for 2008.

The commission is currently served by only 2 Africans amongst its 19 commissioners.
Each Commissioner must have excelled with outstanding qualifications and experience in the science and practice of aeronautics to be considered for appointment and since there are always more candidates than seats appointment is through serious competition.
