ReplyDeleteChelsea’s Abramovich pays for Kili’s porters UK junket
By Navaya ole Ndaskoi
Guides and porters often get tipped but none beats this one. Roman Abramovich, the Russian mogul who owns Chelsea Football Club, has invited nine Mount Kilimanjaro porters and guides to tour the United Kingdom.
While in UK the guides and porters will have the opportunity to watch a game between Chelsea v Apoel FC on December 8 and also Chelsea v Everton on December 12.
"Chelsea Football Club is writing to ask for your assistance in issuing UK visas for a group of Tanzanian nationals to visit the United Kingdom," said Eugene Tenenbaum, Director of Chelsea Football Club in a letter dated October 23, 2009 from the club to the British High Commission in Tanzania which this reporter managed to see.
"They are planning to stay in London from 6th to 13th December 2009. Chelsea Football Club will pay for the flights and accommodation for the listed persons as well as provide a chaperone for them for the whole duration of their stay," Tenenbaum added detailing the passports information of the guests of the club.
"I received this invitation with a happy heart. It is unbelievable to see one of the most famous people on earth inviting us to the UK. He is very appreciative," Alexander Lemunge, the Trip Leader and owner of East African Voyages Ltd. which specializes on Kilimanjaro climbs and safari, said in an interview in Arusha recently.
Lemunge, a global trotting Trip Leader, said the invitation was a golden opportunity to mountain guides and porters who have never traveled outside Tanzania. "They have worked on the 5,895 meter high Kilimanjaro. Suddenly come Abramovich and turned them into tourists with other people guiding them on the London tour."
Tanzanians especially mountain guides and porters are football fans. They closely fallow the England Premium League. The invitation by the owner of one of the most successful football clubs in the world is like a miracle. These fans had already dinned and wined with Abramovich on Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

ReplyDeleteThe trouble is Fergie and ManUTD die-hard-fans complains so often it is very difficult to feel any sympathy for what may have been legitimate gripes.
And it was Referee Atkinson who awarded such a generous amount of injury-time in the Manchester derby (ManUTD vs ManCity), which allowed Michael Owen to bag the clincher. So it is not as if Referee Atkinson has a vendetta against him.
