It took two chartered flights, some international diplomacy, the help of a good friend and close liason with the British Embassy, and after days of uncertainity and logistical headaches, a plane load of marathons elites from Africa arrived in London for the Virgin London marathon this weekend.

Defending champions Sammy Wanjiru and Dita Constatine were among the favourites but it was Tsegeye Kabede of Ethiopia who won the Men's Elite, Abel Kirui from Kenya came in second Mutai Emmanuel also from Kenya, was third
