Thank you for contacting the Jane Goodall Institute and sharing your views regarding Tanzanian President Kikwete and the proposed road through Serengeti National Park.

The Jane Goodall Institute and I share your concerns about this proposal. When I decided last year to honor President Kikwete with a Jane Goodall Global Leadership Award, I wanted to recognize his strong environmental record up to that point. He had supported the banning of plastic bags in his country. He had worked with the Tanzanian government to ensure that his country participated in international conservation agreements including those that protect endangered species such as chimpanzees. He had taken action to protect watersheds and streambeds—at his own political peril. These actions combined represented far more than many African leaders had ever done while in office, which is why in August 2009 I asked if he could accept the award in Dar es Salaam in July 2010.

I was therefore saddened and surprised to hear that President Kikwete recently confirmed his support for the proposed road through the Serengeti National Park. This is in spite of the fact that some 27 respected scientists and conservationists expressed their distress over this proposal in an article in the journal Nature on 16 September 2010. The proposal is also opposed by conservation organizations that have partnered with the government of Tanzania for decades to preserve the natural heritage of the Tanzanian people.

I have spent much of my life in Tanzania, and I understand President Kikwete’s desire to help his people develop a prosperous economy. But President Kikwete has told me personally that he wants to be remembered as the president who protects what is left and restores what is gone. In light of this and the award I have already presented, I have contacted him personally and asked him to reconsider his decision about the proposed road.

If the President’s support for the optional southern route is constrained by available financing, I would be prepared to partner with many of my fellow concerned scientists and citizen conservationists around the globe to approach donor institutions for the necessary capital and technical support. With so much at stake, we could provide a dedicated community of support to help save the Serengeti.

  1. Hoja kubwa na ambayo ni muhimu wadau tukaijadili ni kwamba Serikali ya Tanzania imeshauriwa na imeahidiwa msaada wa kutafuta fedha ili wajenge barabara kupitia njia mbadala (Southern Route).     Naomba Madaraka Nyerere na wadau wengine wanao unga mkono ujenzi wa barabara ndani ya Serengeti (kwenye njia/ramani ya sasa) watupe hoja kwa nini tukubaliane nao. Hasa, ukizingatia kuna njia mbadala na nia dhabiti ya kusaidiwa (tena wale wanao tusaida siku zote) tujenge barabara tunayohitaji na wakati huo huo Serengeti na maajabu yake yote iendelee kuwepo kwa faida vizazi vijavyo.

    Barabara itajengwa tu hata mlobby kwa wazungu. Kwani Jane Godally ndio nani? amechangia nini katika kupunguza umaskini wa watu wa Mkoa wa Mara? Serikali mkiona wanafiki wanaendeleza fitna zao, tafuteni pesa lichimbwe barabara la chini kwa chini kwenye hiyo mbuga. Kilomita 50 sio nyingi za kuishinda Tanzania kutengeneza underground road. JK longa na wachina wafanye EIA na costs za kujenga underground halafu wape kazi. Mdau aliyetoa wazo la underground road ana akili sana.

    mimi nimeshasema sheria zikiwa kali na zikasimamiwa vizuri hilo barabara wala haliwezi kuleta madhara kwa hao wanyama.

    Umuhimu wa hifadhi hizi za mazingira upo. Swala hapa ni je umhimu huu unazidi ule wa binadamu. Kujenga barabara kuzunguka hiyo mbuga ni mpango mzuri lakini je gharama za ujnezi na hata utunzaji wa barabara hiyo na gharama za mafuta kwa hao watumiaji wa hiyo barabara kwa umbali huo unaongezeaka vitagharimiwa na nani?

    Tukipata majibu hayo basi tujiamue nini kifanyike. kama majubu hakuna barabra ya serengeti lazima ijengwa na tuachana na siasa za ki-ji-nga ambazao ukianglai undani wake ni kukkosa kwa majirani zetu biashara ambayo kwa sasa wanajinufaisha wao kwa mgongo wetu.

    SERENGETI THE PLAINS LIVE FOREVER! THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE YOU ALL OVER THE WORLD. Watanzania tuache ubinafsi. Serengeti ni urithi wa dunia na imeshaleta utajiri mkubwa kwa taifa na itaendelea. Tukubaliane na maoni ya wataalam. Wewe unaesema Dr JG amesaidia nini kupunguza umasikini...unahitaji msaada. Hivi unajua mradi wa Chimpanzee aliousimamia kwa miaka 50 kwa kuishi moja kwa moja Tanzania kule Gombe umeliletea taifa mapato kiasi gani? Unapoangalia maendeleo ya mkoa mmoja tu unakuwa short-sited. Angalia maendeleo ya nchi. Huyu mama ameifanyia nchi yetu makubwa sana kwenye eneo la utunzaji mazingira na viumbe. Ni muhimu maoni yake na wataalamu wengine yaheshimiwe. Kama mdau wa kwanza alivyo-quote, ametoa hakikisho la kutusaidia kupata altenative route ambayo haitaathiri eco-system ya Serengeti-the Plains.

    Mimi naunga mkono kuwa kama hao akina Jane Goodhall na wenzake wanataka kutusaidia basi wa fundraise na kujenga barabara ya underground... kwangu naona zote zitakuwa win-win situation, maana wao watakuwa wameshinda agenda yao.. na akina Madaraka nao watakuwa wameshinda agenda yao kwa alternative road inazunguka sana wakati ya kukatisha serengeti ni fupi.. ila Jane Goodhall na wenzie wasije wakaleta tena longo longo kuwa huko chini ya ardhi kuna mazingira yataharibiwa kwa kuchimba chini..

    Wewe mdau unaedai sheria zikiwa kali na zikisimamiwa vizuri hiyo barabara haiezi leta madhara, ni sheria gani unaizungunzia na katika nchi gani? labda weka wazi hili then ndo tuendelee, tanzania wanaozitunga hizo sheria ndy wanaongoza kwa kuzivunja, raia wa tanzania wanaongoza kwa kujichukulia sheria mkononi, leo hii faru walioletwa toka S.A ktk hifadhi ya ngorongoro wameuawa na majangiri ikiwa wanakua monitored 24/7 na askari wa wanyama pori, tanzania inanuka kwa rushwa. sijawahi ona nchi yenye madereva wazembe kama tanzania. leo hii watu hao hao wanao vunja sheria dhidi ya binaadamu wenzao na kutothamini uhai wa binaadamu wenzao utanambia atakua tayari kuheshimu hiyo sheria unayodai wewe dhidi ya mnyama?

    huyo mdau aliesema tuangalie kama umuhimu wa wanyama unazidi mahitaji ya binaadamu, anasikitisha na na pata moja ya jawabu kwanini cc watanzania tunaendelea kua masikini duniani, ingawa tuna rasilimali kibao. huyo mnyama unaemuona wewe hana umuhimu ndy analiletea taifa lako sifa na mapato yasiyo na kifani. na pia wanaopigania tusijenge hiyo barabara ndy hao hao wanaokuja kutembelea mbuga zetu. yaani sawa na wateja, na siku zote unapofanya biashara (ndy mana hifadhi zetu tunazitumia kama mitaji ya biashara ) unaangalia mahitaji ya watumiaji/wanunuzi wa hiyo biashara, na sisi wanunuzi wetu ni hao wageni , ambao wanatoka makwao hulo ulaya na marekani, asia, n.k kuja kufanya contact na nature (na tunaposema nature ina mana ni ile amby haijaguswa na shughuli za kibinaadamu, na tanzania inayo hiyo kitu. na hao wanaona tukijenga barabara kupitia serengeti tutawakosa au hawatokuja. huo ni mfano rahisi sana kuuelewa

    Ikibidi Kikwete kurudisha hiyo award aliyopewa basi ni bora kuirudisha lakini ujenzi wa barabara ni muhimu zaidi kwa maslahi ya wananchi wa Tanzania, particularly hao wa mikoa ya Mara na Arusha. Tunajua huo ni ushawishi wa Kenya wenye sura ya ushindani wa kibiashara kupitia utalii! Mbona wao wanajenga uwanja wa ndege wa Kimataifa mpakani na Tanzania? Nia yao ni kuuwa ule wa KIA kwa kuwa wanajua kuwa abiria wengi watakwenda kwao. Juhudi za kujenga jiyo barabara naomba ifanywe kwa kasi kubwa ili tunufaike Watanzania.

    Jamani, jamani! Tuache mambo ya kishabiki ya vijiweni na tuwe realistic na tutoe hoja za kweli. Kujenga tunnel ya km 50, Tanzania! Are you kidding? Angalieni wapi duniani wamejenga tunnels za namna hiyo. Zimewagharimu kiasi gani? Na gharama za hiyo tunnel ukilinganisha na barabara mbadala je? Wengine wanajisemea kwa namna ambayo inasikika kama "kata pua uunge wajihi." Wazo lolote la kuwakomoa wengine ni extremely reactionary in nature. Lazima tupange tukiangalie mbele tunataka mambo yawe vipi, watoto wetu na wajukuu wetu tutawaachia nini.

    kama kuna uwezekano kupitishia barabara njia nyingine mnapiga kelele za nini? binadamu wabinafsi mnajifikiria nyinyi tu. ndio maana na nature nayo inatu adhibu kila wakati. uwezekano kupiticha nyia sehemu nyingine upo, mnang'ng'ania nini? hiyo barabara ikijegwa hapo mkipata pancha na kuliwa na simba mtaanza kulaumu!! vile vile vitaibuka vimji viiingi njiani na hiyo mbuga itapotea kabisa. this is common sense!
