IBM-Tanzania has presented  to the CCBRT Hospital a gift of a high-end Lenovo laptop computer (T410) with a market value of about US$ 2,000. The gift was in recognition for the unique efforts made by the Comprehensive Community-Based Rehabilitation Hospital, and their out-reach programme using he ultra successful  Vodacom M-Pesa money transfer services.

The money is sent to CCBRT Ambassadors around the country who have identified women affected by fistula and children suffering cleft lips or palates, to pay for transportation from all over the country. They are then brought for free-of-charge corrective surgery at the CCBRT. Thousands have benefited from this scheme, and many more are expected to show up.

The gift was  presented  by the General Manager of IBM-Tanzania, Mr. David Sawe, to the Deputy Director General of CCBRT, Mr. Thomas Vanneste , and his colleagues from the hospital's Registry  and Information Technology Departments. During the brief hand-over at the CCBRT premises, Mr. Sawe extended his appreciation to IBM Distributors, Tri Continental Ltd. (Tricon),  who are currently establishing an office in Dar es Salaam. Tricon had supplied the laptop gift for any local charity to be chosen by IBM-Tanzania, who in turn chose  CCBRT as befitting recipients.

Mr. Sawe further mentioned that June 2011 marks  IBM's  100 years since the company was incorporated. The staff of IBM are commemorating this by placing a special focus on Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives of all kinds. And coincidentally, this year also happens to mark 10 years since CCBRT was established.

In his note of thanks, Mr. Vanneste said that the gift was very timely as it would help alleviate the congestion faced by patients at the hospital's reception desk. While the reception's systems were already computerised and networked, the PCs there were outdated and inadequate to meet the spiraling demand at the CCBRT.

At the same time, CCBRT's promotional campaigns supported by popular song-bird LadyJD, and using mass and social media as well as SMS, have proved to be very successful in attracting many new patients from all over the country.

However, CCBRT, as a charitable institution whose funding relies on the support of donors and well-wishers to enable Tanzanians to have access to "quality health services for all", needs more support to sustain its services.
