Acting Public Affairs Officer Roberto Quiroz II recently welcomed Mr. Mcharo Salimu Mrutu and Ms. Mzuri Issa Ali to the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam.  Mr. Mcharo Salimu will participate in the "Broadcast Journalism and New Electronic Media," and Ms. Mzuri Issa Ali in the "Role of NGOs in Promoting Global Women's Issues" programs to be held in the United States of America from August 8 through 26, 2011.

The U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam recently selected two Tanzanian professionals to participate in the International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP).  Mr. Mcharo Salimu Mrutu, a Tanzanian news reporter from Channel Ten Television, and Ms. Mzuri Issa Ali, chief of the Tanzania Media Women Association (TAMWA) in Zanzibar, will visit the United States of America from August 8 through 26, 2011.  Mr. Mcharo Salimu Mrutu will participate in the "Broadcast Journalism and New Electronic Media," and Ms. Mzuri Issa Ali in the "Role of NGOs in Promoting Global Women's Issues" programs.

They will be joined by over 37 participants from Afghanistan, Angola, Burkina Faso, Bahamas, Botswana, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Cote d'lvoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Hong Kong, Iraq, Israel, Kenya, Lithuania, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Palestinian Territories, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of Montenegro, Rwanda, Senegal, Singapore, South Africa, Sudan, Togo, Uruguay, Uganda, Venezuela and Vietnam.

The "Broadcast Journalism and New Electronic Media" program will include visits to Washington, D.C., and the states of California, Kentucky, and Louisiana.  Its goals include promoting a better understanding of the history structure and functions of broadcasting in the U.S. as well as the influence of new media technologies on the practice and role of journalism.

The participants will also explore how new technologies are shaping the way news are gathered and reported, examine trends in multimedia services, digit only platforms, niche media, business models as well as the implications for traditional media operations.  In addition, the program will review the influence of social media and digital technologies on how citizens use and share information, and address the media's role in promoting an informed citizenry within a democracy, as well as related issues of journalistic freedom, ethics, responsibility and standards.
