Philanthropists and grantmakers from the East Africa region will assemble in Arusha, Tanzania from the 29-30th September 2011 for the second East Africa Grantmakers Conference.

At a time when the East Africa Region is faced with various social economic challenges including drought and famine, organized philanthropy has proved to be a significant intervention. This  has been  evidenced in the various partnerships forged towards famine relief efforts in Kenya. The highly successful  Kenya for Kenyans initiative spearheaded by the  Corporate Society,  Kenya Red cross, and the  Media is one good example.

There is no doubt that  local philanthropy if well organized can play a momentous role in sustainable development.

Although giving has long been part of the African culture, very little has been documented. This presents a challenge for learning and institutionalization of philanthropy towards sustainable interventions.

The theme of the conference is ‘’The State and Nature of Philanthropy in East Africa’'informed by  findings of a research with a similar title conducted by EAAG  with the support of The Rockefeller Foundation which sort to examine the trends and practice of Philanthropy in the East Africa Region. This conference  therefore seeks to interrogate the findings of the research and  discuss  what needs to be done to strengthen the practice of philanthropy in the region.

The conference  will  be an assembly of  leaders in philanthropy/grantmaking organizations and other stakeholders in development including the Corporate Society, International and Local NGOs, Faith Based Organizations and Family and Individual Philanthropists. In addition, this year’s conference will launch the annual East Africa Philanthropist of the Year Award  to celebrate the philanthropic initiatives in East Africa.

The Secretary General of the East African Community, Amb. Dr. Richard Sezibera will officially open the conference and deliver the Key Note address on the  Place of Philanthropy in the Development of East Africa.
