  12. The Liverpool supporter
"We went on a run this time last year of 11 wins in a row without conceding a goal and now I believe that we have the fixtures and a certain kick up the backside that will propel us to go on a similar run this season. Assuming Rafa will play a weaker team in the League Cup, the first team players will come out next weekend against Villa at home, backed by the crowd, fighting to restore pride more than anything else and I believe we will end their unbeaten record. Follow that with another visit of Reading, where we should get ourselves another three points. After that, I honestly believe we can go the rest of the year unbeaten and we will still have the return matches of Chelsea, Man United, Everton and Bolton to come. It may look bleak now, but the table will paint a completely different picture come January 1st 2007!"

  16. Yesterday's performance against Manchester United summarised all our problems this season in 90 mins.

It's clear to me that Liverpool are not playing as a unit but instead rely on 11 individuals who on some occasions have no "Plan B" and just kick the ball about to death until someone decides to grab the bull by the horns and do something with the ball.

    Lets start at the back:

Jose Reina has been nothing short of diabolical this season. I don't care what people on other forums have to say (call me a muppet for all I care), Reina has been shocking. His positioning has been ridiculous and has left me wondering whether we've got another David James ala 1995 - 1996 on our hands.

On some occasions this season he is in no-mans land in his penalty box and is susceptible to be chipped over his head. Furthermore, he is resorting to punching the ball out of his box on almost ever occasion which leads me to believe his confidence is so low he can't even take a basic catch in the air when under pressure.

Our wingbacks have been very ineffective this season. Opposition wingers are getting more and more crosses into our box than ever before exploiting Reina's weakness in the air and putting our central defenders under a lot of pressure.

We still do not have a decent defensive left-full back. Riise is great going forward but is not the greatest of defenders. Fabio Aurelio (Riise's alternative) is an even worse defender and I actually question Rafa's decision to get him (on a free or not..he's very suspect in some situations).

Steve Finnan can be excused as I think he's season hasn't been all that bad, but he is guilty of not creating more overlaps with the wing and is also being beaten by opposition wingers. Perhaps we should have made more of an effort to get Lucas Neill?

The central defenders have been allover the place. I am not going to criticise Sami Hyypia too much. We all know he's lost a lot of his pace down the years. I am however going to criticise Jamie Carragher. Something's just not right with the guy at the moment. He's lost something since he returned from the World Cup and I can't quite put my finger on it.

He's not commanding at the back as he used to be and he's positioning in the box has let us down a few times this season already.

Our midfield has been the most dissapointing of the entire team. I think we miss Dietmar Hamann (or a similar type of player) badly. Our back 4 were always protected with Didi in the team but nowe we are completely overrun in midfield and we do not have the ability to stop play and build from back like we used to.

Momo Sissoko is a shadow of the player we grew to admire last season. We all agreed his passing would be something that he needed to work on. Instead I think he's all-round game needs working on, especially his sight (no pun intended) and vision in terms of distributing the ball and getting it out of dangerous situations.

Instead we are left spending far too long infront of the penalty area trying to clear the ball instead of building up play from the back.

Xabi Alonso has been terrible this season. Of all the players in the team I think he is the one that looks the most "lost". He gets the ball but his brain stops and he doesn't know what to do anymore. Sure he makes one or two very good passes that end up reaching one of our players;but his overall plan is uncertain and I question whether he is depressed/lacks confidence?

Steven Gerrard....shocking. I don't care if Rafa says Gerrard is about to reach top form. He's far from reaching any form whatsoever. The guy is a headless chicken at times! He thinks he's "Mr Wonderful" and runs with the ball and tries to do things on his own (such as against Everton) without taking into consideration the other players on the pitch.

I think Rafa and him need a serious discussion around what role he wants Stevie to play because I think Gerrard is confused (being shuffled from left-wing to right-wing to central midfield). It's time Rafa and the captain came up with some sort of "basic" game plan to get us playing like a unit again.

Mark Gonzalez is probably my player of the season thus far. The guy is trying to impress and has bags of pace and things "happen" when he has the ball. I am glad we finally got him but its time we started using him as effectively as Chelsea use Robben and Man U use Ronaldo.

Jermaine Pennant has been the most dissapointing of Rafa's new signings. The guy has a lot of potential but I wonder if he has a Footballing brain. The guy has bags of pace but he tries to show-off to much with his skill and tries to beat people left, right and centre intead of trapping the ball and "surveying" the area. I feel if he doesn't come right he will be shipped off next year (with Daniel Alves replacing him).

Dirk Kuyt has been impressive but drifts off to the right-wing unecessarily (like yesterday) leaving us with no one in the middle to put the ball in the net. He tries to over-compensate for a lack of cohesion between the right wing and right full back and instead leaves us with just sticking out on the right-wing until "something happens".

Nevertheless, Kuyt is a great buy and I hope he starts banging them in consistently.

Craig Bellamy can also be accused of being a headless chicken at times. A footballing brain is something I think he may lack but the potential is definitely there. I just want him to click with Kuyt and Crouch and get himself in some sort of form. The talent is there...whether the head is there is another question altogether.

Peter Crouch has been okayish this season. I would still like it if he knew where the ball was going after it came off his head. He is also not holding up play and waiting for support to arrive like he did last season.

Finally, Rafa Benitez is due for some harsh criticism. He's rotational policy has backfired miserably and it's time he went back to basics and trained the guys to think as a team and not as individuals. Something is clearly not right behind the scenes.

All in all, we've had a pretty piss-poor season so far by our standards. Its time we started getting things right before this ends up being one of those infamous Souness seasons where all we wanted was for the thing to end and dream of another title next year.
