Governor General Michaelle Jean and Prime Minister Stephen Harper

Parliament of Canada

The Governor General of Canada is the vice-regal or viceroy representative in Canada of the Queen of Canada , who is the head of state. A viceroy is a royal official who governs a country in the name of and as representative of the monarch. Canada is one of sixteen British Commonwealth realms, all of which share the British monarch as their royal leader.
The monarch appoints the Governor General on the advice of the Canadian Prime Minister, who is the Canadian Head of Government, after which the Governor General maintains direct contact with the British monarch. There is no specific term.
The Prime Minister of Canada is currently Stephen Harper. The prime minister is appointed by the Governor General, who is now Michaelle Jean, but to ensure the continuity of a stable government, this person must have the confidence of the House of Commons to lead the government. The Prime Minister of Canada is the primary Minister of the Crown, chairman of the Cabinet, and thus head of government of Canada .
The office is not outlined in any of the documents that constitute the written portion of the constitution of Canada and executive authority is formally vested in the Canadian sovereign and exercised on his or her behalf by the Governor General.

Michaëlle Jean (born September 6, 1957, in Port-au-Prince , Haiti ) is the current Governor General of Canada . Jean was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II, on the recommendation of Prime Minister Paul Martin, to succeed Adrienne Clarkson and become the 27th Governor General of Canada since Confederation in 1867. Jean is Canada 's first black Governor General.
Prior to this, Jean was a journalist and broadcaster on Radio-Canada and the CBC.As the current Governor General of Canada , she is entitled to be styled Her Excellency while in office, and The Right Honourable for life; given current practice, she will be sworn in to the Queen's Privy Council for Canada after her term as the Queen's representative has ended.
Jean fled Haiti with her family from dictator François Duvalier's regime in 1968. Her father, from whom she was estranged for many years, was a philosopher who was tortured under Duvalier's regime and separated from the family for 30 years. The Jean family settled at Thetford Mines , Quebec .
As a student at the University of Montreal , Jean received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Italian and Hispanic languages and literature and, from 1984 until 1986, taught Italian studies while completing a Master of Arts degree in comparative literature.
Jean attended the University of Florence , the University of Perugia , and the Catholic University of Milan to continue her studies in language and literature. Besides French and English, Jean is fluent in Spanish, Italian, and Haitian Creole and can read Portuguese.

The prime minister is appointed by the Governor General, who is now Michaelle Jean,"..Kha..it seems they both appoint each other?!?!

  6. Hapa unaona tofauti ya muonekano wa mabunge ya wenzetu bunge letu. Mabunge ya wenzetu yako very simple sisi tunatumia pesa za walipa kodi kujenga expensive buildings for bunge, why? Ukiangalia mabunge mengi nchi zilizoendelea yako simple sana.

  7. The governor is not appointed by the PM; he/she is appointed by the Queen. The role of the PM in appointing the GG is just to advice the Queen on who would be the best candidate, however the PM does not have executive powers to decide who the GG would be.

he GG in turn does appoint who the PM is. Usually the PM would be appointed from the party that holds the most seats in the federal parliament; however this is not a legal requirement and in theory it could be any Canadian aged 18 (provided they are deemed fit to lead, i.e. being of sound mind, etc).

I hope that clarifies things. I know the whole appointment thing may seem cyclical; but as I stated, the PM does not have the absolute power to appoint the GG, he/she just advised the Queen/King.
Moreover, in most places there is always some kind of cyclical relationship; for example, in Tanzania, the president appoints the Chief Justice. In turn, after elections, it's the Chief Justice who swears in the president-elect.

  8. mdau wa kwanza, Michuzi is not totally wrong. The Monarch of UK has many titles; one of which is Monarch of Canada. So Queen Elizabeth is indeed the Queen of Canada; since Canada decided to stay a constitutional Monarchy and not become a republic. It was the same in Tanganyika from 1961-62.

  17. NINAVYOELEWA MIMI, IN ANY CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY, THERE IS A CLEAR SEPARATION OF POWER BETWEEN THE HEAD OF THE STATE (GOVERNOR GENERAL)AND THE HEAD OF THE GOVERNMENT (PRIME MINISTER). KAMA MDAU ALIVYINENA HAPO JUU, THE GOVERNOR GENERAL IS APPOINTED BY THE QUEEN ON THE ADVICE OF THE CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER; CANADA'S HEAD OF GOVERNMENT IS THE PRIME MINISTER (STEPHEN HERPER) WHO IS ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE. KWA SABABU HIYO, GOVERNOR GENERAL HANA UWEZO TENA WA KUMTEUA PRIME MINISTER, KWA SABABU YEYE (PM) NDIYE MWENYE MAJORITY KATIKA BUNGE. IF THE PM LOOSE HIS MAJORITY IN THE PARLIAMENT OR OPPOSITION WIN THE VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE, THE THE GOVERNOR GENERAL, AS THE QUEEN REPRESENTATIVE, HAS THE AUTHORITY TO ASK THE PRIME MINISTER TO RESIGN, AND DESOLVE THE PARLIAMENT.

  19. Ok, The same mistake has been stated over and over. I will try to larify. The governo general does not again does not elect or choose the prime Minister of canada. The people of canada means Canadians vote on the election day and the party that wins the election meaning getting more votes over the other one wins the election. Now whoever is the leader of that party becomes the Prime Minister of Canada as simple as that.
