Mr. A.S. Thind's presednce was heavily felt thru a 2000 Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School year book during a succesful re-union of students and teachers held last night at the Hellenic Club in Dar when over 200 former students gathered for a new year's bash
Asst. Headteacher Mr Champsi was around. He lamented on the lack of teachers in the alumni, wondering why most had shunned the noble profession and chose others like law, medicine, business etc. But he was happy that there are no known failures are known from the Mzizima alumni

Nini kifanyike?

  11. THE CHOSEN FEW: This is a late posting but only becasue I was hesitating tossing it about. The proud admission of the assistant heatmaster made me look back to a recent survey I read in the papers. The survey, conducted in the UK showed a strong correlation between family status and career destinations. The Mzizima re-union and the headmasters comments almost confirmed the long-standing belief that MZIZIMA was/is a place for the chosen few. The hypothesis here is that many years Mzizima has been "naturally" marginalising competitors from other schools with respect to access to higher education. Consequently, its alumni are more likely to land lucrative jobs in promising and prestigious careers such as medicine and law and least likely to fail in life (Ass. Headmaster et al., 2009).

I must make it clear that I am not envious of Mzizima's achievement nor that of its alumni. I am only highlighting the plight of millions of children who due to their families background start off from low quality schooling environment and drag on through poorly equipped schools into less promising careers. Compare these to those kids taking off from posh nurseries through well-equipped schools and end up as lawyers and surgeons. Again, please do not shoot me down, I was only thinking aloud and proposing a potential social science research topic to dispel a rumour (which I am starting now) that 95% or registered lawyers and medical graduates either went to Mzizima, Shaaban Robert or Feza.
