I have been following the raging debate on Dual Nationality and Migration on your blog. I have keenly followed John Mashaka , US Blogger and other subsequent contributors. To me this shows the high level of understand and political maturity of our community both at home and abroad .It is healthy for a community to have such a debate.

Today the mayors from Europe’s biggest cities gathered in London at city Hall for a major conference to sign a chatter setting their vision for a migrant integration policies. The Charter underlines the commitment of Europe ‘s big cities and mayors in addressing migrant integration through their roles as policy makers service providers, buyers of goods and services and employers.
In his key note address , the Mayor of London Boris Johnston said “ London is a city shaped and enriched by the people who have come here from all corners of the globe .Our history is not only English , but its also the history of the Italians ,French ,Scandevians,Jews,Irish, Asians , and countless more…
“It is then fitting that London should be at the forefront of work to enable migrants to play a full and rich part in our society .Only in embracing the skills ,enthusiasm and entrepreneurialism of all of our residents –regardless of their place of birth-will London , and Europe emerge from the Global Down turn stronger, brighter, and ready for the future”.This is contrary to the statement I heard before along the lines that ‘ hawawezi kufaidi hapa na kule walipo ..”
I hear that the Foreign office in Tanzania will soon introduce a Diaspora desk. .With the forthcoming Diaspora conference to be held in London I know lots of ground will be covered around this debate.

What Tanzania especially the Diaspora desk should know is that the Tanzanians that left home some time ago are not the same Tanzanians any more in terms of cultural , social ,economic differences.
We have the good ones and the bad ones. Among them we have Gays , Lesbians ,Bisexuals or trans people , Matapeli, mazungu, the rich and the poor . So the challenge to the Diaspora desk is to ensure that their strategies are effectively supportive in terms of services and planning.
Lastly I want to use this opportunity to thank the current administration on its policies on poverty reduction , and economic growth in Tanzania. But as well as promoting growth , it is also important that all Tanzanians have the opportunity to benefit from that growth .
The current administration wants A Tanzania where everyone can play their full part .By promoting equality and tackling depravation by spreading economic opportunity , we can end the division between the haves and have nots. We in the Diaspora want to be part of that process.

Waweke mambo clear kuwa wanataka wawe wanakuja na kuondoka kirahisi tu na pasiport yoyote wanayotaka bila kufuata sheria kamili za immigration.
You can still make your contribution to the nation even without dual citizenship, just like the Chinese diaspora did in the last 20 years by sending billions and billions of dollars to their motherland. Let's not fool ourselves, the ulterior motive of those who want dual nationality is the elastic chord of convenience and not remittance and other altruistic reasons. Because of my job, I spend a lot of time abroad (where I used to live. Althogh it would be convenient for me to have 2 nationalities, I still think that TZ is not ready for it. Nationality should be more about commitment and not convenience. Wasalam. Njau.

ReplyDeleteThe Tanzania High Commission in London in collaboration with the Tanzania Association in the UK (TA-UK) are organizing a Tanzania Diaspora Conference (Diaspora 2 London) to take place from the 26 to 27 March 2010 at Sattavis Patidar Center, Forty Avenue J/W The Avenue, Wembley Park, Middlesex HA9 9PE(London, United Kingdom). The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Bernard Kamillius Membe will grace the occasion.
The two-day event will include a Diaspora support agenda (Day One) and a general meeting of the TA-UK to approve a new Constitution and to elect the association’s leaders (Day Two).
Conference Agenda
The Diaspora 2 London is a follow-up to the first Tanzania Diaspora Conference held in London on the 18th April 2008. As it was the case with Tanzania Diaspora and Skills Conference the Tanzanian private sector has been invited to participate. These include banks, NHC and estate agents, employment agencies and strategic companies that will be targeting to employ people from the Diaspora. Tanzanian companies as well as Tanzanian NGOs and groups operating in the UK will be encouraged to take out a table for display of their activities. Institutions and entities that have a bearing on the Diaspora such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Bank of Tanzania (concerning remittances mobilization), Ministry of Lands (concerning land allocation) and CRDB (concerning Tanzanite Account), Commercial Banks (Concerning home finance loans) have been invited to make presentations.
Objectives
Diaspora 2- London is necessary for the following reasons:
■To review the outcome of Diaspora 1 and what has been achieved both by Government and the TA-UK.
■To acknowledge the growing recognition of the value and importance of the Diaspora and to consider how the Government can lend greater organizational structure to the Diaspora to consolidate their capacity to organize and to engage with the Government
■To deepen the links between the Diaspora and their Government and their home country
■To acknowledge the growing need of qualified Diaspora to relocate back to Tanzania following the opportunities now apparent back home and to find ways of facilitating their relocation
■To acknowledge the presence and consider ways to facilitate repatriation of many Tanzanians in the Diaspora who came to the UK for various reasons and who now would like to return home.
■To explore further opportunities for enhanced engagement between the Government and the Diaspora and to devise strategies for way forward particularly in view of current policy of the UK and other European countries to block entry and the loss of many jobs following last years global financial crisis.
■To consider the creation of a Diaspora Committee to advise the Government and to lobby Parliament on matters of interest to the Diaspora.
Note: Sattavis Patidar Centre is located just off the North Circular Road and the car park on ‘The Avenue’ Corner of Forty Avenue will be available for the conference participants. Those wishing to come by bus can take buses number: 245, 223, 83, 182, 297 and PR2. By tube they can use Metropolitan Line or Jubilee Line to Wembley Park.
