African Barrick Gold (ABG) hosted the 3rd Rafiki Fundraising dinner at the Kilimanjaro Kempinski Hotel in Dar es salaam to raise funds towards facilitating free reconstructive and orthopaedic surgery for children who do not have access to treatment for anomalies such as cleft lip, cleft palate, club feet and burn scars.

The Rafiki Surgical Missions have conducted over 735 surgeries since its inception in 2004. These missions are made possible by funds raised by Rafiki Gala Dinners held annually in Dar es Salaam and Perth, Australia. The ABG Rafiki dinner in Dar es Salaam has raised over $ 139,000 between 2008 and 2009.

ABG’s Vice – President for Corporate Affairs, Deo Mwanyika said, “The Rafiki Mission are a tribute the special partnership Tanzania and Australia that is founded on the common desire to create fellowship and goodwill”.

He said the business community has a unique role to assist in scaling up innovative solutions to challenges faced by host countries by bringing the private sector’s unique approach to solving problems.

Traditional sponsors of the Rafiki initiative are mining companies who utilize their presence in regions like Mwanza, Shinyanga and Mara to engage communities and co-ordinate logistics to transport patients to the designated hospitals host the Rafiki missions.

Mr. Mwanyika said, the Rafiki Surgical Missions form part of ABG’s broader community health agenda. Which focuses on HIV/AIDS, Malaria and increased access to healthcare services.
