NOBODY in his right mind would condone the torching of churches and shops in Zanzibar last weekend. But it is a great shame that so many, including some of the top leaders in the country have made these symptoms of a socio-political malaise in the country the central issue for discussion rather than looking at the disease itself.
It seems to have been a bonanza for most of the newspapers on the mainland who have used this to launch for what I can only call Islam and Zanzibar bashing spree for more than a week. As a Zanzibari I am proud to say we have had more than 170 years of history of Muslim-Christian interaction in our islands, and before 1987 we never had anything but cordial relations between all religions in our country.
Anybody who disagrees with this can produce the evidence. The highest denomination of Zanzibar’s independence stamps carried the theme of religious tolerance, designed by our revered art teacher Mr Abdalla Farhan, showing the Catholic and Anglican cathedrals, a Sunni and a Shia mosque, and even a Hindu temple. Nobody should try to teach lessons about religious tolerance.
The modern history of Muslim-Christian interaction in Zanzibar goes back to 1840 when the German Christian missionary Dr. Johanne Krapf visited Zanzibar to ask for permission to build a church at Mombasa which was then part of Zanzibar’s territory.
According to the  missionary’s own testimony, the Muslim Sultan of Zanzibar, Seyyid Said bin Sultan, wrote to his governor in Mombasa in which he said: ‘I am sending you Dr Krapf. He is a man of God who wants to spread the word of God. Do everything in your power to facilitate his work.’ This was not because Seyyid Said was a uniquely tolerant ruler, but because this was the tradition of religious tolerance in the Indian Ocean before the coming of the colonialists.

yes i agree with what you are saying about religious tolerance. But what is you conclusion? why only christian centers were attacked? we are far away from what the sultan of Zanzibar said one century ago! what is the realityof life in Zanzibar?
tell us more about your convictions and the real life in Zanzibar today?
    Thanks

Only churches and bars were affected because whoever did that wanted people to believe that it was done by Muslims and in this case UAMSHO. If the Mosques were affected then it would not be possible to blame the Muslims(UAMSHO).

I do agree with the historical review of what happened a century ago in Zanzibar.

The major point I was able to pick from your discourse is your criticism of "the bashing spree of Islam by the mainland newspapers".

The question is "Why should they not be condemned for burning Churches and pubs"

I certainly hope you are not trying to condone this savagery!

Unaikumkuba hadithi ya ngamia aliekaribishwa kichwa akaingiza mwili wote. Ndivyo hivyo tena. Mwenye nyumba anakosa pa kukaa matokeo yake inabidi itokee purukushani. Everybody is for the union, it should be strengthened for the benefit of both sides.

    Prof:

    Sharp right, two to tango.

And I add, it takes one to know one. Meaning, it takes mdini to know another mdini. In swahili we ask, "umejuaje kama na we si walewale?"so it is a community modern problem that needs more than speculative answers by clerics without very well learnd scientific reasoning.

If it is udini, christians and muslim both have a good share, not one clean one filthy as many would wish to be.

From history, it seems muslim are on the retaliation side. Chrinstians dont wanna admit the sin nor appolgize for it, but books document their actions since colonial era to inheriting colonial rites after independence. Discriminate muslims at public services, they know their motives.

I think they wanna show that being christian is success here and in the hereafter, otherwise is dumb, curse, loss, failure and all bad there is to name.

They wanna realize the kingdom of jesus themselves not let Jesus realize it himself if really is a king. Why help crowning the king? I know the answer, you wanna have share in the kingdom at the expense of our rights.

Why bother that we are misgided therefore we have to suffer? why not let God punish us Himself, He is fair, duh. Why want us to live the hell to prove your point?

Remember, anything you do you meet it downstream. If it is to make me a criminal by "kubwia unga", for you to prove my religion does not save, just know that it will also cost you.

By the way, those who torced tha church were among the ones who had a bit of "unga for crusade"

Huyu Prof hakuna alichoongea, kichwa cha habari hakiendani na ujumbe uliotolewa, na hajatoa conclusion yeyote na zaidi anaonekana ni mdini tu.

Frankly the Professor's account is so devoid of depth and thought unworthy of a person claiming such grand academic credentials. What a pity!

It is too far easier to cite an incident or a set of them to make simplistic conclusions.

Does the Professor really speak from his conviction when he contends there is a disproportionate ownership of shops by Wabara in some village in Zanzibar! Does he truly consider this deserves to be examined?

What next? The imbalance of of ownership in stores at Namanga or chunks of land owned by Zanzibaris in Bara? Do you see where this leads?

I would have thought the professor or any person deserving such recognition would be more circumspect: sadly the professor failed miserably!

It seems that all of you are not aware of the going ons of Zanzibar, and it is very unfortunate that bias reporting occupies the lion's share, of course for specific strategic goals. Reporters, have not you seen the destroyed Mosque at Msumbiji suburb of Unguja, then why haven't you reported this issue?
