Tanzania participated in the 17th Non-Aligned Ministerial Conference, which ended in the Algerian capital, Algiers, on May 29.
The conference, which was opened by Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal on behalf of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, adopted a final document asserting NAM’s position on global political, development and social issues, ranging from reform of the United Nations, peacekeeping operations, terrorism, disarmament, post-2015 development agenda to food security.
The ministers also adopted the Algiers Declaration and five other specific statements, including reaffirmation of support for Palestinian nationhood, nuclear non-proliferation and a vote of thanks to Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra and the host country.
The conference, which was held at the Palace of Nations, was attended by almost all the 120 members of the movement, many of whom made statements. Speaker after speaker reaffirmed the relevance and validity of NAM in bringing the members together to address emerging global challenges.
The Tanzanian statement was read by Mr. Japhet Mwaisupule, Minister Plenipotentiary, on behalf of the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. Mahadhi Juma Maalim.
Tanzania urged NAM to continue pressing for fair and just economic, financial and trading multilateral institutions. Reform of these institutions “will not be complete without involving the United Nations Security Council. We must stand together in calling for early reform of the Council so as to make it more effective and responsive to the aspirations of all members,” said the statement.
It also called for new trade and investment rules that work for the benefit of developing countries to facilitate implementation of the global development agenda.
The Ministerial Conference, which was preceded by a Senior Officials Meeting, was addressed by His Excellency Ivo Morales, President of Bolivia, in his capacity as Chairman of G-77 plus China.
