We are excited to announce the lineup for next edition of #THEBEATFESTIVAL. The program features Jagwa Music (mchiriku / afropunk), Peter Masima (traditional gogo music) and Mzungu Kichaa Unplugged (acoustic performance). Entrance; 10k only. Doors Open 21.00hrs.

JAGWA MUSIC – afropunk / mchiriku
Jagwa is the leading exponent of the Mchiriku style, which originated twenty years ago in the poor suburbs of Dar es Salaam. Jagwa and their peers were immediately attracted by the the small Casio keyboards lo-fi sound, adopted it, hooked it up to megaphone speakers, and the resulting gritty, edgy, distortion-laden sound became Mchiriku. Their career, which started in Mwananyamala, one of the poorer suburbs of Dar es Salaam, has taken them to some of the biggest stages across the globe.

PETER MASIMA – traditional gogo music

Peter Masima is a talented Gogo musician from Dodoma. He plays Marimba, locally known asilimba and Zeze, a stringed fiddle, and is also a skilled instrument builder. He is fairly unknown on the cultural scene in Tanzania despite his enormous talent. We think it is about time that he is introduced to those who have yet to hear his “voice”. The late Hukwe Zawose who was signed to Peter Gabriels Real World Records made the music of the Wagogo popular globally. It has also been researched by a number of ethnomusicologists due to its rich and unique musical and cultural heritage.

MZUNGU KICHAA – unplugged performance

Debuting in 2009 with his album Tuko Pamoja, Mzungu Kichaa and his band Bongo Beat have created a unique style of live Bongo Flava, which has taken them around the world. Tonight Mzungu Kichaa will perform a selection of old and new songs upfront and personal with a solo acoustic performance with his guitar after a two week songwriting retreat in Morogoro.
