Larchfield Charity
Organization has began laying the foundation of a children’s home and primary
school called Larchfield in Mkuranga.
The objective is to build and operate a home and school for children aged 3-16
years that will eventually house and educate up to 300 children. In this
initial phase Larchfield is building the facilities necessary for a community
of 50 children and support staff, the cost of which will be around the region
of USD 275,000.
Larchfield’s objective is to
address the desperate plight of increasing numbers of Tanzanian orphans and
disadvantaged children who have been abandoned by their parents and other
family members through death, disease or other incapacity to maintain a
functioning family unit.
Tanzania is one of the
fastest growing nations in the world. The population is now estimated at about
51 million with no sign of slowing down. It is estimated that there are over
1.5 million Tanzanians living with HIV/AIDS and 1.3 million orphans as a
consequence of the epidemic. Roughly 2000 of these orphans are located in the
Mkuranga district. Therefore in response to this, Larchfield aims to combat
this situation by creating a happy, safe and secure environment for children in
need in Mkuranga. The home will be an environment where each child can flourish
and develop to his or her full potential regardless of race, sex, religion or
other defining characteristics.
On this joyous event,
volunteers from Gulf For Good who participated in raising some funds for
Larchfield visited the foundation in Mkuranga. The volunteers intereacted with
the children who will be beneficiaries of the project. Larchfield has been
warmly welcomed within the local community and has significant support from
local authories and the Tanzanian government.
