Sauti za Busara festival brings more wisdom for East Africa’s music scene

On February 9th, the Old Fort in Zanzibar opens its doors for the region’s largest and most innovative music event. In only four years, Sauti za Busara has established itself as a leading cultural event on the African Continent. Over six days, forty music groups including more than four hundred artists will be performing. East African music is well represented with a diverse selection of artists, some already popular and others upcoming.

From East Africa, Sauti za Busara 2007 presents live music by:

Jose Chameleone, Juma Nature & TMK Wanaume Halisi, Matonya, MB Dogg, Fid Q, Makadem "Ohanglaman" (Kenya), Annet Nandujja & The Planets (Uganda), Amani Drummers of Burundi, Chibite, Jhiko Man, Sanaa Taarab (ft Omar Kopa), Shirikisho Sanaa, Tamarind Band, Culture Musical Club, Matona & G Clef (featuring special guest Bi Kidude), Qasida Swiffat Nabawiyyatul, Nazareth Choir, Olith Ratego (Kenya), Shailja Patel (Kenya/USA), Yunasi (Kenya), Zemkala, Akhenaton Family, Black Roots, Chema Culture Group, Islanders Band, Kariakoo Sanaa, Mafunzo Ngoma and more.

Groups from other parts of the world featuring at next week’s festival include The Collaboration featuring Chiwoniso & Busi Ncube (Zimbabwe), Didier Awadi & Phat 4 (Senegal), Imena (Rwanda), Dhow Crossing (Norway/Zanzibar), DJ Eric Soul (Rwanda/UK), Ellika & Solo (Sweden/ Senegal), Mo'Some Big Noise (Austria/Mozambique) and Netsayi (Zimbabwe/UK).

Sauti za Busara 2007 will also feature a film screening; no less than the world premiere of “As Old As My Tongue: The Myth & Life of Bi Kidude,” filmed in Zanzibar and around Europe over the past four years by ScreenStation (UK), in partnership with Busara Promotions. This much-anticipated film will be shown at the Opening Ceremony of the festival on February 9th, where the official Guest of Honour is Hon. Muhammed Seif Khatib (MP), Minister for Information, Culture and Sports.

Performances take place continuously from 4pm til after 1am daily. Everyone who arrives before 6.30pm is able to get in for free, and then ticket prices are 1,000/- TSh for residents (admit once) and 10,000/- for visitors, with readmission.

With the rare opportunity of so many musicians together at one time, there are also plenty of chances for collaboration and sharing of knowledge and skills. For example, the three-day Swahili Encounters music fusion workshops provide a forum for musicians to meet, exchange and learn from each other, as well as forge new directions in artistic collaboration.

Swahili Encounters is open to invited artists only, around twelve musicians, mostly from the Swahili-speaking region, playing a variety of instruments. During three days before the festival the participants work together to create new compositions (or new interpretations of traditional Swahili songs), which are then performed on the festival main stage.

This year also sees another important and practical seminar, free and open to anyone interested in getting music management and marketing skills. Says Yusuf Mahmoud, the Festival Director,

“In Tanzania, there is an extraordinary wealth of musical talent and the festival provides a snapshot of, and a spotlight on, the different musical styles that we believe are, or could be, of interest to both local and international audiences. We hope that our Music Marketing and Management Seminar will sow some seeds – even if they take time to bear fruit. Our aim is to give a boost for local music in the international arena, by passing on tips and information to artists, for example how to produce press kits, apply to participate at other international festivals, the importance of written contracts, and how to use the internet to promote yourself effectively. Most of these are low-cost options that with perseverance can really produce results.”

The festival opens with a Carnival Parade through the streets of Stone Town on February 9th and finishes with a Finale party at Kendwa Beach on Zanzibar’s north coast on Valentines Day February 14th. Meanwhile “Busara Xtra”, for the first time, is a programme of fringe events taking place in alternative venues nearby, where festival guests can check out Swahili food, crafts and fashion, a traditional dhow race, and more music and dance.
Festivals bring people together, help to invigorate young people’s interest in local culture, help the artists themselves to meet and learn from each other, and promote a new kind of culturally conscious tourism for Tanzania. International visitors have been coming for years to see the animals in the game parks and climb Kilimanjaro or enjoy the beaches of Zanzibar. Thanks to the international festivals taking place on the islands every year during February and July, Zanzibar is becoming one of the leading centres for cultural tourism and artistic exchange in East Africa and the world.
