TAARAB – Workshop in Pemba
TAARAB – Workshop in Pemba
19. October – 9. November 2007
Since opening 2002, Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA) has developed into a vibrant center of music and a meeting point for amateur and professional musicians. DCMA provides musical education to anyone interested in studying music, regardless of age, gender, religious or political background. But still, Zanzibari outside of stonetown can not benefit from the school due to the lack of means of transportation. Therefore, DCMA developed a rural outreach program funded by UNESCO and designed to bring music education and know-how to the more remote places of the archipelago.
In 2005 and 2006 DCMA held several workshops in Mahonda (about 25 km outside of Zanzibar Town) and Pemba. These were so successful that it led to the opening of a offical branch of DCMA in Mahonda in January 2007. And as for Pemba, three musicians were granted scholarships.
Pemba, as a part of the Zanzibar islands, has a rich musical heritage and a flourishing music scene but no formal music education. Moreover the existing musical groups suffer from an acute lack of instruments to practice with.
In this workshop, like in the previous ones, DCMA will bring teachers and instruments over and hold classes in voice, qanun, percussion, violin and accordion. All participants will be given instructions in music theory and ensemble.
In cooperation with our counterpart Hamadi Juma, the Cultural Officer in Pemba, the participants were chosen from all parts of Pemba and different musical groups to give more groups the opportunity to participate, and gain knowledge about their music and improve their skills. Like in the past 2 years the workshop will take place in a playground in Tibirinzi near the city of Chake Chake. But this year’ s workshop will be 3 weeks instead of 10 days giving the students more time to practice with the instruments and their teachers. And – equally important – to create the rare opportunity to play together.
The concert on the 9. November will mark the end of this workshop. But the next workshop for Pemba is already scheduled for January 2008!
UNESCO funds this workshop, like other activities of the DCMA Rural Outreach Program.
