On the 5 to 7 of April, the best Scrabble players from Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and of course, the home-grown favourites, Tanzania will enter with bravery and skill the mind-boggling minefield of competitive Scrabble.
Here in our very own Blue Pearl Hotel, spectators can scratch their heads wondering whether or not QWERTY is a word as the clocks tick by and the East and Central African Champion emerges.
The Tanzania Scrabble Players Association (TASPA) was formed in June 2001. Since then the organisation has gone from strength to strength. They have organised more than a 100 local tournaments in Dar es Salaam, have sent Tanzanian Scrabble players to the World Scrabble Championships in cities as diverse as Las Vegas, Kuala Lumpur and Mumbai, hosted the All Africa Scrabble Championship in 2004 and now for the second time, will host this year’s East and Central Africa Scrabble Championship.
Tanzania is fielding a strong team for this year’s ECASA and there are high hopes vested in TASPA’s top three players, Dr. Mushtak Esmail, Ms. Shahnaz Hirji and Mr. Toyo Kitua. Could one of these top-rated players bring glory to Tanzania this year? Other contenders from Tanzania include Mr. Hamisi Quezi, Mr. Mashambo Mcharo, Mr. Salum Hussein and Mr. Zamboko Mwarami. These players, in particular, have all displayed the skills of winning wordsmiths in recent training exercises.

Not to mention the wildcard of the bunch, Mr. Ed Miliano, who has recently joined the team’s ranks. Over the past months, the Tanzanian side has honed their skills and memorised extensive word lists in preparation for the forthcoming tournament. It really is all to play for as 5 April looms and the endgame is in sight.
