TIGO DONATES 2 MILION TO MUHIMBILI UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH AND ALLIED SCIENCES for “WIN AND LEARN” 2008 ANNUAL UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC EVENT.
Leading Telecommunication Company tigo today donated 2m/- for this year's “Win and Learn” event organised by the Muhimbili university student organization.
The support will mainly used in the “Win and learn” academic event to be held at the Muhimbili University Conference Hall on Saturday 14/june 2008.
Speaking to journalist Tigo Marketing Manager Kelvin Twissa said “The main objective of Tigo to sponsor this event is to enable Tanzanian health students to research and learn on various topics of health interests that will bring changes in Tanzania during their tenure as students”
“Tigo recognize the work done by health students in their researches, and other academic findings; to bring a sense of learning with intentions rather than for leisure, pressure or exams in the health field” he said
We decided to support Win and Learn Academic event as it help to build and creates forum of exchange for health information among students of different health fields. Twissa ended that

“Win and Learn” is a series of annual academic events that take place in the University under the academic associations of Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) namely Tanzania Medical Students Association (TAMSA), Tanzania Association of Pharmacy Students (TAPS), Tanzania Environmental Health Students Association (TEHSA), Tanzania Dental Students Association (TDSA) and University Nursing Students Association of Tanzania (UNSATA) aiming at putting to values all the works done by students during their study at the university in research, inquisitive learning in medical, dental, nursing, environmental and pharmacy practices in form of competitions. The idea of such an event is a result of a joint effort of all the academic associations present at MUHAS. It was established early 2006 and succeeded to hold its 1st event on 17th June the same year and the next one was successfully done on 16th June, 2007. The main purpose of having such an event once in a year was to unveil the knowledge gained by students in their course of study, hence come up with solutions to a lot of healthsituations allowing them to ponder how they can apply it for bringing changes in developing countries especially in Tanzania.
The name “Win and Learn” comes as a gear towards archiving its goal of sensitizing students to undertake learning seriously anticipating winning. Though winning would be a small part of the event it was projected that the initial motivating theme should be able to gather students from their different disciplines with different academic objectives but for a common goal of solving the nation’s health problems, hence “Win and Learn”
The Organizing teams seek advice and guidance from their patron Prof. Bakari. S Lembariti, who is currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning Finance and Administration) – MUHAS
The first “Win and Learn” Academic event took place on 17th June 2006 and brought together 289 participants. A total of 32 papers were presented out of 52 which were submitted. The papers presented included researches, pictographic, health information of interest and clinical cases. A total of five (5) senior academic staffs were used as judges and the event was officiated by the principal of the college, Prof. K. Pallangyo. The event was under the college registrar Prof. B. Lembariti as the patron and was attended by both students and academic staffs.
The 2nd Event just like the fist event showed that the university academic students associations can play a vital role in promoting efforts geared to elaborate the health problems facing the country.
The 43 presentations made by students this year in the four categories addressed problems of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, malaria, environment degradation and youth related problems as smoking and sexually transmitted diseases.

Findings in the perceptions of the general population to the use of ARVs, and problems associated with post exposure prophylaxis were among the HIV and AIDS related issues addressed.
Nothing can be more ridiculing than a telecommunication company donating Tshs. 2m/ to a school of medicine. That is less than £1000 which most Muhimbili alumni could donate to the school. Tigo may have funded the visit of 50 Cent (correct me if I am wrong) and how much that cost them some of us will never know...

ReplyDeleteI guess that this is just a joke. The date shows that the donation was made on the 1st day of June 2007 (1/06/2007). May be any other donation after the visit of 50 Cent will be much more "generous"!

Shame on TIGO for using the university as an object for publicity and marketing. The publicity service that the university offers at the event is much more worthy than the mil 2/=! Please, business people treat our universities with respect!
