CALLING FOR A SUMMIT OF TANZANIANS IN DIASPORA IN NOV-DEC 2009 - SURVEY
The Tanzania Professionals Network (TPN) attended the just ended Sullivan Summit VIII and could not for sure see the tangible outcome of which Tanzanian Professionals and Entrepreneurs could benefit or take advantages as publicized in the media before.

TPN is therefore seeking opinions of how it can organize a similar meeting of Tanzanians in Diaspora which can bring impact. The main agenda being Financial Empowerment and Wealth Creation.

Why calling for a Summit?

1. TPN believes the high standards of life which we all need to have are not self created. They can be created by brave citizens of Tanzanian (In Diaspora and Home) who have interests of their country’s prosperity at heart.
2. TPN believes that Tanzanians living abroad loves their country, although they may have other country citizenship! We believe if they are well motivated they will take interest to do more investments in the root country than abroad. This is the case than any other African Diaspora.
3. TPN believes more important that Tanzanians living outside the country can bring the savings back home instead of keeping it outside the country. Not necessary to bring the money to invest (which would be best) but could keep it into a bank account or any special fund to be agreed at the Summit, the bank or Special Fund may give the poor via the Micro-finance lending programmes and other credit facility which might be made available over here.

4. In order to revise the brain drain, TPN believe multitude of sociopolitical issues have to be taken care of before those who are educated or have an entrepreneurship spirit could seriously stake their interest at home.

The planned Summit of Tanzanians in Diaspora wills bring together the Tanzanian’s political and business leaders, delegates representing the National civil organizations, and members of academic institutions in order to focus attention and resources on Tanzania’s economic and social development.

The development of Tanzania is also a matter of partnerships with Tanzanian’s in Diaspora. It important that Tanzanians in Diaspora and Friends of Tanzania are active participants in Tanzania’s development. We propose the Summit to be organized by TPN to highlight the practical key issues, stimulate effective discussion, define best practices, identify new opportunities and business partnership with Local Entrepreneurs (In a serious note) , promote private enterprise and foster high-level strategic partnerships.

It is anticipated that Creative and innovative initiatives will emerge out of discussions and negotiations at the Summits, and new relationships will be brokered in order to make those initiatives a reality. As it was the case of Sullivan, we expect the Summit to be a bridge between Tanzanian in Diaspora and those in Tanzania, serving as a forum for a practical economic cooperation.

Inputs Requested from you:

1.TPN would now like to have opinions from Tanzanians (in Diaspora and in Tanzania) on the best way to coordinate and organized this meeting.

2. TPN would like to list down the names of those who might be interested to attend the Summit, what they expect and any highlight of any business proposal they may have.

3. TPN is also welcoming potential sponsors who would like to sponsor the Summit.

4. TPN would also like to establish chapters in all countries where more than 10 Tanzanians can be members and in Tanzania Regions where more than 20 can be members

    Dear Mtsimbe,
I do not know if you are or not the author of the message that accompanied the invitation to the summit of Tanzanians in the Diaspora and those at home. Nonetheless, what I am getting from that post though, is a mixed take from you.

On one hand you are saying you “could not for sure see the tangible outcome” on the other end you are interested in calling similar summit just like Sullivan’s. The later statement pretty much summed it up – you got inspired! why in the world would you want to do something similar to the one that (if I may borrow your words) for sure you could not see any tangible outcome?

In my opinion I think Sullivan summit may not have brought what you think it should have but one fact that you are overlooking is it brought in real people, real African American, real African and real Tanzanians. All these people were there in the summit.

It was not and it should not have been Sullivan’s job to pour in some money or some kind of investments into our hands. What we should have done in our part is every one of us (Tanzanians) should have done our homework, I mean; we needed to identify areas of our respective interest and then make lots of research about those specific areas. Armed with information from our research we could then have used Sullivan Summit to help us hook up with the “right” people, even better, we could have asked those African American for specific names of the people we identified in our research.

I saw lots of “influential” people in the summit that we could have used as a springboard for our agenda. We could have seduced people like Chris Tucker to come to Tanzania to shoot some kind of a movie, this could have given our country a lot of publicity. Not only that, it could have also boosted the economy in that area (Town) through hiring locals, renting hotels, cars and other amenities. All those are tangibles that we decided not to see!

You do not think Sullivan Summit would have helped in any way to hook you up with American business community?
If you were interested in information technology Curtis might have helped
    Curtis H. Tearte
    Company: IBM
Position: General Manager, Innovation Solutions, IBM Systems and Technology Group
    Industry: Information Technology
    Country: United States

If you are interested in food industry for example, you do not think the Summit would have helped to get in touch with people like
    Clarence Otis, Jr.
Born: April 11, 1956, Vicksburg, MS.
    Company: Darden Restaurants, Inc.
Position: Chief Executive Officer and President
    Industry: Food Services

How about in the beverage industry
Company: The Philadelphia Coca-Cola Bottling Co.
    Position: Chairman, CEO
    Industry: Beverages (Non-Alcoholic)
    Country: United States

In telecommunication industry you could have used the summit to get to know
    William E. Kennard
    Company: The Carlyle Group
Position: Managing Director in the Global Telecommunications and Media group
    Industry: Financial Services
    Country: United States

So you think Sullivan summit wouldn’t have helped you to get to know people like Richard Parsons who in turn could have pointed you to the right direction? Richard Parsons was/is the CEO of Time Warner company

Are you interested in house financing business? May be Sullivan might have been able to find you a mentor in Franklin D. Raines.

The above are just few examples of the names (people) you could sought after in the meeting – may be they were even there you juts did not take trouble to find them. Yes, I agree with you there may not have been that many tangibles in the Summit, however, there were a lot at stake for you to take advantage of. Had you let you curiosity take over, you could have turned those intangible into significant tangibles now or in the near future.

I am sorry if I stepped in your toes but I just felt compelled to drop you a line.

Reading all the comments above one would easily conclude the following:The Sullivan meeting was not well planned and therefore was meaningless to us Tanzanians but to the few probably. TPN is engulfed with arrogancy and full of demagogy therefore its existence is fruitless.Another organisation need to be in place!
