Berlin, 21 July 2008.
Peter Glenn’s "Kwenye Mwangaza/Into the Light" has won the first Ousmane Sembène Films for Development Award at the 11th Zanzibar International Film Festival in Tanzania.
"The film successfully manages to communicate and convey messages of hope, showing the tenacity and compassionate resilience of the human spirit even in the face of adversity", explained the three-strong international jury.
The prize, worth USD 5,000, is awarded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) in cooperation with the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) and Southern Africa Communications for Development (SACOD).
It recognises films that take a fresh and innovative approach to development cooperation issues. This year, HIV/AIDS was a key theme in many of the 13 films nominated. The prize money is used to support the winner in their future cinematic work.
"I am delighted with the jury’s decision. The film vividly depicts how important it is to diagnose and treat people with HIV/AIDS at an early stage.
Future development depends on how far we are able to gain control of the pandemic, in particular in the most severely affected African countries. Kwenye Mwangaza makes an important contribution to this," said Thomas Kirsch-Woik, GTZ expert on HIV/AIDS.
On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GTZ is shaping the German contribution to the global AIDS response and is developing further approaches in the fields of HIV/AIDS prevention.
As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives.
It provides viable, forward-looking solutions for political, economic, ecological and social development in a globalised world. Working under difficult conditions, GTZ promotes complex reforms and change processes. Its corporate objective is to improve people’s living conditions on a sustainable basis.
