The government has called upon the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) to put in place proper strategies to control counterfeit products that have flooded the Tanzanian market.
The Minister for Industry, Trade and Marketing Dr. Mary Nagu, made the call during her tour of the bureau in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
``There are a lot of complaints from consumers out there concerning fake products in the market. I challenge you to have a strategy in curbing them.
We as government are ready to support the move in areas of policy, rules and regulations,`` she assured.
``Let us not accept to turn our country into a dumping place for substandard and fake products.
You need now to collaborate with other agencies whether international or regional to ensure these products do not enter our market,`` Dr Nagu said.
The minister said already the ministry had tabled a bill in Parliament in order to establish a new law on standards to cope up with emerging changes of the world.
``However, the law alone without strategies in fighting fake products will not assist much. We expect after the bill has passed and the act is in place, you will cooperate with other organisations internationally and regionally to contain the problem,`` said the minister.
For his part, the TBS Director Charles Ekelege told the minister that his bureau had been collaborating with other agencies including the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA), Water and Energy Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Fair Competition Commission (FCC) and Surface and Marine Transport Authority (SUMATRA) in checking fake products from entering the country.
``We have come to this stage particularly by positioning our people and having offices on boarder points for close monitoring of counterfeit products entering the country,`` he said.
The director said the bureau was also looking for a possibility of having a preshipment verification of conformity to standards so that all products are verified while in the country of origin.
Already the Tanzania market is flooded with fake products mostly from China and other Far East Asian countries.
