1. Exchange Visit between DCMA and the Comoro Island
Workshop: January 10 - 21, 2009 (Studio 1, Moroni)
Concert: January, 19 at the French Cultural Center in Moroni

In this first exchange visit DCMA sends the four members to the Comoros to hold a 10 day workshop in Moroni. Traveling for DCMA are as teachers Mohammed Issa (Matona) Haji (Oud), Mohammed Othman (violin) and Fadhil Mohammed (percussion) as well as the bass guitar player and member of the Board of Trustees/Artisitic Committee Adel Dabo.

The Comorian group is headed by the well-known musician Boina Risiki and Chihabiddine Said Abdallah, director of the radio station Studio 1, where the workshop will take place. About 10 musicians will participate and the workshop will focus on practical training in Oud, Violin, Percussion, Kudumbak & Taarab. A joint concert on January 20th at the French Cultural Center in Moroni will mark the end of this visit.

Taarab music is the most important form of Swahili cultural expression, not only along the East African Coast but also on the Comoros Island, where it is known as Twarab. Like Swahili culture in general, Taarab was shaped through centuries of trade and travel between the countries of the Indian Ocean and incorporates elements from Africa, Arabia, Egypt and Asia.

Due to the lack teaching institutions for traditional music in the region, a new generation of Taarab musicians is missing. Not least through the work of DCMA a new generation of Taarab musicians is now being trained in Zanzibar and here Taarab is showing signs of revitalization.
On the Comoros on the other hand Twarab music is endangered. Though still on demand, especially during weddings, political turmoil of the recent years and widespread music piracy had the local music industry all but collapse and many talented musicians left the country to make a living abroad.
The UNESCO funded project Songs of the Moon aims at safeguarding traditional Swahili music in the Indian Ocean Region through providing opportunities for local musicians of the region to learn from each other, thus initiating a intercultural and intergenerational dialog.
Planned is a total of three exchange visits between teachers and students of the DCMA with musicians from the Comoros. The 2 following exchange visits are planned for later this year.
