As a matter of fact the global economic situation is frightening. No doubt no country will be spared from this crisis.

Trying to critically analyze what is happening now, somehow the problem lies on confidence and faith among various groups in the economies namely consumers, banks, investors ETC. Government of those countries which are severely affected at the moment are doing the right thing to infuse the confidence in the markets and helping banks in order to keep credit flowing hence increasing liquidity in the economies.

Looking at situation in Tanzania, in my view the external sector will be hit in the long run. This will be attributed by declining demand in importing countries. The remedy to this can be to increase a basket of our trading countries partners. I think it is the time to consider emerging markets like India and China for our exports.

Further since most multinational companies are shelving their expansion plans and concentrating on executing stability strategy, for this case therefore the foreign direct investment flows will be hit and this will impact the employment generation process to acertain degree.

Finally i think it is high time for our Government to increase development expenditures and shun away unnecessary waste limited resources we posses. To this direction the decision taken by President Kikwete to stop Government purchases of cars and conducting fruitless seminars is commendable. This step will help to free resources to boost agriculture and develop our poor infrastructure.

To my fellow citizens this is the time to tighten our belts, be innovative and work hard. we should take deliberate initiatives to boost our industries by buying our own products especially when there are no significant differences between homemade products and imported products.

To businesses in Tanzania This is the time to crack our heads to produce products of high quality and factor in many markets for exports while maintaining stability if opportunities for expansion are not forthcoming.
Thank you

Some of you are back room workers/ research specialists and clearly your advises are ought to be kept in your heads if not your asses. Geeez, its appalling to read some of your advises. First learn to right facts and not what you've been taught in the classes.

  3. I trully sympathise with your concern Jack, butt what to do?I still believe that this government of the day still has a lot of unfinished business before private investors can walk in and start walking the walk!So much empty talk on government having been able to create a conducive environment for the private sector to conduct business, but how far has this been true? Why are things not happening,if everything is all right? When every body else is talking about putting in place a Stimulus Package, our local leadership has all along become very pretentious as if nothing has gone wrong! How about the Taxation Stink in our country?Triple taxation of industrial inputs?Absolute lack of local protectionism to infant production units?I am not talking about reconstituting Monopolies again of the Ujamaa Era,No Sir!How Far have we gone into establishing Our Basic Needs in this country for the purpose of assessing our Domestic Demand or Domestic Effective Demand?Against which we would know the required Supplies?Supplies from which Domestic Industries?Have we been attempting to do this, atleast just this? Why not?How would you establish a vibrant domestic economy when the bulk of its Domestic Buyers do not have the Purchasing Power? When the Financial Markets aren't simply working? When the bulk of the consumers in the country are poverty-trapped and cut off from the official formal monetary economy?Where there is No Social Security for each and every working-age and retirees?Where Commercial Banks have been converted into Money-Shops and Not Banks in the real sense of the word?Instead, you'd hear our local leaders refreshing themselves of the economic successes, this among the poorest countries in the world albeit its enormous resource potentials, has been able to achieve!Industrialisation per se is painstaking process! The techonologies that go with it are under lock and key in the industrialised west. With this kind of messed-up fiscal regime, who on earth would be prepared to sink his Money into the economic Quick-Sands of Tanzania and not be tempted to invest in our neighbours who have the discipline to abide by the rules of the game? How far have we gone along empowering our indegineous industrialists and investors? You said something about buying Tanzanian, right? With the given tail-piece monthly wages how on earth could someone for instance afford to buy a liter of beer at tshs.2,600/= a day if he were to do so,compare that with the price of one liter of petrol sold at tshs.1,400/= current market prices?I have just chosen beer as a case in point but there could be a thousand such cases.ITS CHEAPER TO IMPORT THAN TO PRODUCE LOCALLY AT GOING FISCAL REGIME IN THE COUNTRY!did you know that,Sir? well check it out!
