Taarab music is the most important form of Swahili cultural expression, not only along the East African Coast but also on the Comoros Island, where it is known as Twarab.
Already in January this year, a team of DCMA teachers went to Moroni where they gave a 10 day oud and Kidumbak workshop for 20 Comorian musicians from various orchestras playing different styles.
The participants were very enthusiastic to find new ways how to integrate traditional instruments into their music and after a hugely successful workshop held at the local radio station “Studio 1” they performed a concert together at the French Cultural Center.
Two of the participants are coming now to Zanzibar for another exchange visit: Abdérémane Chanfi (oud) and Mohamed Youssouf Tarik (guitar), two of the younger generation of Comorian musicians. They are accompanied by the well known Comorian gambus player Boinariziki Mouhimidi.
A workshop presentation concert on Friday, February 6th at 4 pm will mark the end of the workshop. The project Songs of the Moon is funded by UNESCO and the Japan Funds-in-Trust for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
