By Frederick Mboma

I would like to join the discussion on China following the ongoing campaign by the government to burn products that they call “fake” most of which carry the “Made-in-China” label.

By the way I am an entrepreneur and I often if not always look at things from a business perspective for I still believe that money makes the world go around.

Now here’s what is happening regarding the so called “fake” goods..

Back in the late 1980’s China emerged as a low cost manufacturing area. Greedy business executives in high wage Western countries saw the opportunity to maximize profits by shifting operations to China and other Asian countries such as Philippines, India, Malaysia and Taiwan.

What was exactly happening is that you’d find for instance a seller of designer clothes such as Levis would simply state that they are paying $1 to $2 per a jeans trousers and leave it to the Asians to take it or leave it.

And of course there were takers. But the takers understood that they were being heavily exploited as the same pair of jeans trousers that they earn $2 for would be sold in America for $50 to $80 Sounds familiar? (coffee.. cashew nut... cotton growers are you there??)

But the Asians hatched a plan. If they got an order from say Levis to manufacture 100 pairs of jeans trousers they’d create twice or even three times as much and sell the original 100 to Levis at the agreed $2 per item. They’d then sell the remaining 100 or 200 pairs to a Chinese trading company for a little bit more (such as $3 to $5 per item).

These trading companies would then either re-sell those items in China or export them to countries like Tanzania for much cheaper than brand owners (like Levis) would have charged.

So you’d find the trousers that were being sold under the table to other partners apart would be as counterfeit as the ones sold to the brand owner.

Therefore brand owners (many of whom are to be found in USA) discovered this and started a war to protect their INCOME.

Therefore when I see agencies like the Fair Competition Commission of Tanzania running an operation to burn these “fake” jeans I see someone being a mercenary for the brand owner.

I am not going to make a judgment call on that whether it’s good or bad... but the question I ask myself is, “Who is paying the bill?”

Is it up to us Tanzanian tax payers to pay the price of protecting Western brands that have been compromised in China? As an entrepreneur I think that’s NOT right.
We are throwing money out of our system for nothing. The Chinese have already sold the products to us so they have pocketed our money. The Western brands have indirectly recruited our government to act as mercenaries for FREE.

That’s one part of the “counterfeits” game. I’ll be back with part two dealing with so called “inferior” goods (or goods of “inferior” quality)
God bless Tanzania
God bless all of you

When you go shopping in China, you greedy business men you are given two choices one the original or genuine products and counterfelts (looking similar) you end up choosing the conterfelt ones in order to maxmimize profit on the expense of our lives, you are MAFISADI too.

  7. The problem with most of fellow Tanzanians especially the so calling themselves educated are too political to justify what they perceive the fact, at the same time they do forget that this world is now just like a one village where we share news, it is nonsense telling people that IT IS ONLY CHEAP LABOUR THAT CAUSES LOW PRICED ITEMS FROM CHINA, China is a big threat to EU do to cheap labour that caused EU members to complain to the union as China seems to supply same quality goods at cheaper price.
For your information, China always meets customer's demand and specification basing on quality and agreed price, more than 50% of goods in developed countries are imported from China.
I would be on your side if u say that TBS should be playing its part during importation of goods, also the fair competition commission of Tanzania should give enough knowledge to traders to avoid complaints.

  11. As a a pundit business man based in kariakoo, i would like to let you guys know that China is not producing all products fake, but it depends on how you bargain on price while reflecting back the market {Tanzania} in particular. However we've got both low quality and high quality products from china, this is because we want to move on the business, and bear in mind that no business man is doing business for charity, this far we're forced by the market itself to import low quality and cheap products to meet the demands of the market as well as moving the business forward.

Justifying tht China is not producing all products fake, see products in the uk most of them say 50% are from china and they are of super quality, if the market change obviously we will change too.So china produce what you want at the agreed cost!!

Ndio mabo yanavyokwenda. Nothing new but the way he presented his arguments and examples in a very short message beats all those who make loud noise in pages full of flaws and misconceptions about China. He is a world class thinker and writer. So far he got more critics than supporters. He does not have to get supporters or reduce the number of idiot critics. He is an outstanding fellow in terms of how he approached the subject. Keep on keeping on Mboma.

  18. Huku mtoni ukitaka Premium brands clothing to shoes kuna maeneo yamejengwa exclusively to sell premium brands at a discount. Some brands when they are discounted too much they lose their value.
It is true that some brands are overpriced. It is true that in some brands some innovation and so much work has been used as a factor for a high price charged to the consumer. It is true that these premium brands spend so much money annually to advertise on TV and in other media. I am talking about spending billions of dollars just for advertising not producing a quality product. So these brands end up becoming so expensive and also it depends on who they are targeting. Some brands target high income earners and some target just anybody willing to throw money away to get the feeling of owning the product. How does China come into equation? There is a low cost to it but quality can not be sacrificed to gain low cost. You can not buy a good NIKE at WalMart. You can not by a good and brand new NIKE in China in the street for $15 unless it is stolen. In USA people pay up to $120 for a pair of NIKE sneaker made in China. IT DOES NOT COST $15 TO MAKE A PAIR OF NIKE IN CHINA. WHY DO PEOPLE IN AMERICA STILL PAY $120 TO GET A PAIR OF NEW NIKE LIKE AIR MAX WHILE THEY KNOW THAT IT IS MADE IN CHINA AND CHINA IS CHEAP. HOW DOES NIKE SUCCEED IN THIS HIGHLY EDUCATED MARKET LIKE USA. HW DO THEY CONVINCE PEOPLE THAT THE SNEAKER IS WORTH THE BIG BUCKS, LOOK AT IT, TRY IT,FEEL IT.SOME CHINESE PREFER TO BUY NIKE IN USA INSTEAD OF IN CHINA.WHY IS THAT?

OUR IMPORTERS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE BRANDS THEY BUY BEFORE THEY IMPORT THEM.
IF ALL IMPORTERS HAD MBOMA'S CALIBRE AND IF OUR GOVT AND ITS AGENCIES FOR COMMERCE WAS DOING ITS JOB WELL WE WOULD NOT HAVE THESE PROBLEMS OR THESE KINDS OF DISCUSSIONS. WHO TO SUE WHO TO BLAME WHO WILL PAY DAMAGES FOR PRODUCT LIABILITY OR PRODUCT MALFUNCTION? IMPORTERS? CHINESE MANUFACTURES? HELL NO.FIX THE PROBLEMS AND IMPLEMENT GOOD SYSTEMS OF ENSURING QUALITY IMPORTS IN THE COUNTRY. NINJA.
WE DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF SYSTEM IN PLACE RIGHT NOW IN BONGOLAND.

  19. There are two issues here that must be addressed, “fake” as in substandard (substandard food that might cause people to die such as the melamin laden Chinese milk, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Chinese_milk_scandal) is unequivocally unacceptable, because it’s utility has the potential of being not only low, but in some cases actually negative (as in poisonous food)

Fake as in “not coming from the trade mark owner” is more debatable, especially from an emerging market’s perspective, which is why this anti-Gentleman from Verona is trying to argue.

The capitalistic (read cabalistic) point of view is that intellectual property and trade mark laws must be protected, but the capitalistic point of view also holds free trade very high, aren’t trade mark law and intellectual rights concerns impediments to free trade? How about the enterprising Chinese not being given a fair chance under their

The problem with China is not so much that the street hawker is counterfeiting western product, the issue is that China, with it’s vast population needs a paradigm shift just to survive. China is not known for fairness, it’s capital punishment inequitable sentences show that, even the central bank manipulates the Yuan openly.

Here is why people from emerging markets should not rejoice from the ascent of Chinese counterfeitism.

    1. Quality of goods and products – The example given (Levi Jeans) is rare, not representative and unfairly grouped under counterfeit products. If the Levi Jeans are genuine but sold improperly that is not a counterfeiting issue per se but perhaps a trade mark violation issue, there is nothing counterfeit there. The author is even justified in objecting to Tanzanian resources being used in policing these cso called “counterfeit” goods on behalf of the west.It is up to the West to protect their interests. Most of the counterfeit goods are substandard and could even be harmful. I have some very patriotic Chinese friends who would be the first to tell you about China’s lack of Quality Control (Think melamine, substandard toys etc)

    2. Counterfeit goods harm investment – In a market driven world economy, the habit of counterfeiting goods, while may prove cunning at sight, is actually counterproductive at the macro level, especially to the emerging markets. Somehow these Louis Vuitton bags and fake Levi find their way into Canal St and as a result the developed world is exposed to alternative goods of sometimes impeccably similar face value to the expensive bona fides, this causes price competition and a drag down of prices which will end up causing a further reduction in the prices and therefore wages for the Chinese workers. I acknowledge there is a concept that demand is created by lowering the price but at the same time that demand also attract many a consumer who would otherwise consume the prices Fifth Avenue Products.

Of cource not everything made in China is fake..but when people talk about fake it means FAKE!..most of businessmen who comes to China would bring the Original make of say a Levis jeans and reproduce in bulk to any manufacturing company depends on price..It may look the same but it's FAKE!..
This is what happens, cause I know Levis had their own plant, so are many western companies, they do have shares or tight connection with manufacturer knowing the risk of their product being reproduced.

Blame our Traders,Dont blame the Chinese! Our traders are the ones who are "fake and dishonest",not the Chinese!Ask our traders to stop the habit of "Buy Cheap,Sell Expensive".To our traders,Ignorance and Poverty of our people who are their own blood brothers is "Business Capital".The Chinese on the other hand are struggling and determined entrepreneurs who are fighting their way up,and there is a day they will produce sophisticated elitist consumables and industrial products! They will never produce sub standard products all their life!If you were to shop in Europe or the US for instance, you would come across high quality chinese products of equivalent western standards! They produce a whole array of products for different tastes! The choice is upon the consumer or the buyer! This where our merchants fall prey to the intoxicating possibilities of making a kill by Buying Cheap even though inferior and sell Expensive exploiting the ignorance and poverty of their own kins!Visit our neighbours just across who also happen to go to the same Chinese Market, and find out what sort of products in terms of quality do they bring back to their homelands? You will get the shock of your life! Some of our own traders who can not afford to go to China, who would go to these neighbouring countries and buy goods to sell back at home, would carry back Chinese goods But of better and superior Quality! How does this arise? Its dishonesty and Greed amongst our own traders who capitalise on the ignorance and lack-of -know-how and poverty afflicting millions of our people!Under those circumstances, would you still blame the Chinese?

Nijuavyo mimi wachina kule kwao ni very honest. Ukienda kununua bidhaa wanakuuliza UNATAKA ORIGINAL AU FAKE? wafanya biashara wa kwetu husema haraka haraka FAKE! wanapewa fake wanarudi nazo kutubambika hapa nyumbani na kupata superprofit.
Wachina ni very strategic busines people. They know how to meet customer needs and tastes. Chochote utakacho wao watakupa. Sasa mnawalaumia nini wakati tunapewa choice??
Be ethical business men.

  28. Alichoelezea Mboma ni kweli, chanzo cha bidhaa kutoka china ndio hicho, ila wachina wakaendelea kuproduce copy. Kila nguo unayonunua Europe geuza nyuma soma imeshonwa wapi- china. Kuchoma moto sijui kuna faida gani, wakati nchi yetu masikini. Wawape watu wanaohitaji hivyo vitu

  32. I’m not supporting what Mr Mboma wrote, but I’m equally, not on the side of those going against his personal side, instead of concentrating on his contents.

‘Understandably’, we got many ‘English lecturers’ in this blog than in England as a country, yet lots of our kids and adults alike continue to struggle in English! BIG TIME!

Mr Mboma, just like other positive ‘thinkers’, touched something that worth a discussion! I mean discussion! Not just anything produced from keyboard bashers as underpinned by some contributors!

I loathe those who just want to ‘say’ anything for the sake of anything!

Of course, some could argue, we are where we are as a country, not because we’re not good enough in doing things but because we got so many people who want to spend their ‘valuable’ time to give out bosh stuff whilst pulling other people down. Needless to say, those criticised Mr Mboma’s look fall under this category.

Sad to mention, we live in the world where people are judged by the look of their face and not by the substance of their contents! Pol e sana Mr Mboma, you have to live with that!

    Back to the topic!

Big companies do outsource their manufacturing units to China etc, not always down to greediness as you have underpinned above. There are many reasons, among others, is the leverage power of the customers (us) in the marketplace.

Customers’ demand on cheap at the same time ‘quality’ products encompass the decision of these companies to shift their manufacturing facilities to the countries you have mentioned. Not only this would increase their chance of survival in the market as manufacturers but would make these products affordable to customers (us). For instance; assume everything you see is made in the country of its origin, do you think we could be where we are now? I don’t think we could even afford to buy toothpaste/mobile phone of our choice! Think about the effect on job market as well!

Of course, I don’t mean to say everything under the said mainstream is perfect OK! The 'world' has to look into companies that exploit such system in order to fill their bottomless pockets. Things like child labour and environment awareness have to be at the centre of discussion and rigorous measures should be taken against those companies exploiting the system. Also quality has to be adhered by manufacturers to make sure customers get ‘what is written on the tin’ and not harmful substances/products especially for food and medicines.

Something worth mentioning here is that we as consumer/customer never give a damme about how product was manufactured-we just want product! But for those in manufacturing background would agree with me and appreciate the complexity of manufacturing processes. In fact, these days for manufacturers to be able to realise a small profit, they need to bend over backwards even more than used to be! I don’t think there would be anyone to blame them if they go to the likes of China and India and come up with a win-win situation for both parties!
