The New Main National Stadium
It is barely nine months before the2010 World Cup soccer finals kicks off in South Africa. The world’s biggest sporting event is certainly expected to draw attention of soccer fans scattered across the planet, including Tanzania.
We hope the government, the private sector and soccer stakeholders in the country know very well that the tournament is not meant to be for entertainment but also an opportunityto take bold steps to make use of the championship so that Tanzania canin a way benefit from the global event.
The benefits we have in mind include thechance to learn and improve on our soccer expertise and in tourism, oneof the foreign exchange earning sectors in the country. We have to capitalize on the advantageof the three-hour flight between Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg, SouthAfrica’s main international entry point to lure teams and other soccerfans in terms of sporting tourism.
The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF)and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism must workhand-in-glove to set up, improvise and then execute plans that woulddirectly benefit the nation.
Plans must be directed at makingTanzania one of tourism destinations to attract at least some of the 32qualifier teams (except the hosts) for the event.TFF leaders have to work beyond theirroutine to hook sports tourists beginning with the 2010 World Cup drawto be held in Cape Town on December 4.
It will be absurd and a bad record onthe performance of TFF and the tourism ministry should they fail to dosomething for the country to gain tourism revenue out of the eventbeing held at a stone’s throw from our country.
Going by the present situation in thecompetitive bids to host the World Cup, we should not expect anotherevent of similar magnitude to be staged as close as this one to be heldin South Africa next year.
While we have the advantage of havingthe ultra modern stadium located in Dar es Salaam, something must bedone to make it a training transit for some of the teams featuring inthe World Cup soccer tournament.
The Stadium should not remain a whiteelephant while there are tangible opportunities to explore and gainsubstantial amount of revenue.Where possible some of the WorldCup-bound teams must be invited to play warm up matches at the Stadiumto provide local fans with an opportunity to watch soccer action fromthe World Class teams.
Lobbying should be the foremost weapon in taking advantage of our closeness to the World Cup venues.Instead of the soccer federation leadersconfining themselves to the promotion of domestic football, effortsmust also be focused at hooking other international footballassociations to visit Tanzania.
This is the time to exploit the WorldCup advantage before it becomes too late. TFF leadership must beinnovative enough and where possible set up an ad hoc marketingdepartment to deliberate the plans that would be beneficial to thenation.
We should not let the opportunity and its advantages slip through our fingers this much easily.

Maximo kajitahidi kuwaleta Wabrazil hapa bila mafanikio. Hali ya hewa ya Dar haifanani kabisa na hali ya hewa ya viwanja vya Afrika ya Kusini. Kumbe tulipaswa kuujenga huo uwanja huko Iringa au Arusha.
