Mirfat Nourdeen (17), Fatma Thabit (18) and Hassan Mahenge (25) won a music contest for young musicians under the age of 26 that took place at the DCMA in Zanzibar on 10 January 2010. The proud winners of this award are all pre-existing students at the academy studying Qanun and Oud - instruments deeply rooted in the musical heritage of Zanzibar.
The three were awarded full study scholarships to enable them pursue their certificate level studies at the prestigious Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA).
According to DCMA Artistic Director, the scholarship covers course fees, all study materials required including a loaned instrument and weekly transport allowance for a period of one year starting January 2010.
The total value is two million shillings, sponsored by the Andrew Scrivener Fund (UK) established between the DCMA and the family in memory of the late BBC Philharmonic orchestra Violinist to sustain the studies of young and talented music students from all Tanzania.
The Dhow Countries Music Academy is a not-for-profit music institution based in Zanzibar that provides quality music education in various instruments as well as music related disciplines such as traditional African Dance, Music Theory, Music Technology as well as providing music courses in several schools.
