Hasheem with his Dakota Wizards team mates
When news surfaced that Hasheem Thabeet is headed to the Development League (D-League), the reaction among Tanzanians especially the users of social networks such as Facebook and blogs were overwhelming.
I guess the big question in lots of folk’s minds was; what is a D-League? Does it suggest that he is no longer going to be playing in the usual NBA league? Well, it depends on a lot of things. You can read more about the D-League and its implications or benefits to Hasheem career by clicking here and also here.
The social networks such as Facebook and blogs were immediately stuffed with comments and opinions. Some were wishing him a “quick comeback “to the NBA, while some couldn’t hesitate to throw jabs on him in the sentiment of “we told you”.
The Memphis Grizzlies have just assigned center Hasheem Thabeet to the Dakota Wizards, Memphis’ NBA D-League affiliate. The assignment is the 23rd time an NBA player has been assigned to an NBA D-League affiliate this season.
Thabeet, the second overall selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, becomes the highest-drafted NBA player to join an NBA D-League roster. In 50 games for Memphis this season, he averaged 2.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 10.3 minutes.
A 7-3 native of Tanzania, Thabeet played three seasons at the University of Connecticut, averaging 10.3 points and 8.5 rebounds in 100 career NCAA games. Named the Big East Co-Player of the Year and the Big East Defensive Player of the year in 2009, Thabeet was also a two-time NABC National Defensive Player of the Year. During his final campaign at UConn, Thabeet averaged 13.6 points, 20.8 rebounds and 4.2 blocks (second in the nation).
I guess the news was “worth the talk”, because not only Hasheem is the first Tanzanian ever to play in the NBA, but also the highest draft pick ever to go to the D-League.

BC: Hasheem, what is your reaction to
this whole thing of moving to the D-League?
HASHEEM THABEET: "My reaction about D-League…Uhmmm… well I’m excited to participate in the D-League. I’m looking forward to playing and maximizing this opportunity to be on court and use the skills that I have developed thus far rather than to be on the bench.
"Right now the key for me is consistency court time as I am still learning the Pro Game. I know Coach Hollins has my best interest at heart so I’m happy with his decision which I believe is to make sure that I stay active.
"Now I know this is the time for the haters and all the doubters to talk and say whatever they have because they have been waiting to bring me down for a minute. So it’s my downtime and I promise I’m not backing back.

"It’s a new saga that has started. Plus I’m still be getting the same cheque… it’s not like they are not gonna pay me the usual.
"So I’m still good and soon I’ll be back!!! And oh by the way, I’m only going there for 6 games. So I will be back sooner than they are thinking" says the towering Hasheem.

Results? Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward.
ReplyDeleteHasheem always remember that we do learn through mistakes and the past, from my perspective no body hates you but they wish u good prosperity.
yOU are a super star so whatever comes to u will be a big deal to the society sorounds you.
So give your heart and be courageous for the future.
God Bless u
Dr.Mallaba
Like what i said in my last comments, He is there just for an asignment, now it is clear only for six games!!! Keep it up Hasheem. Tuko pamoja. let them haters keep dreaming and may be learn something abt NBA and NBA- D league!
We all love u
ReplyDeleteAll the best, Hashim Thabit
ReplyDeleteAWALI, kabla Hasheem kuingia NBA.
I still dont understand this d league thing.Hasheem says that its only for 6 games i that is what confuses me!!!! yaani kuwa the first 2nd draft to be picked into the d league kwani ni sifa hio jamani!!!
ReplyDelete"HIGHEST DRAFT EVER TO GO TO THE D LEAGUE" yaaani marekani mtu akishuka daraja ni sifa mi kweli i dont get that na wewe hasheem you really need to get down na kuomba msamaha sio ndo unaanza kuattack haters you are the one who made them wrote all the comments
Kazana mdogo wetu. Utafanikiwa. Sijui ni kwa nini, I dont know. somebody please help this young fella
ReplyDeleteHasheem u got all the pedigrees to bounce back.I am proud of you!!.just dont lose a focus and be positive. But bear it in your mind that any downtime experience in life should be considered as an opportunity to be a success.Haters and doubters are there to stay no matter what happens. These are the challangers that you have to work hard your backside to prove them wrong.we should always be proud of achievements. We have to change our mentality towards money aproach.Never be motivated by payouts but archievents.you may try to limit your network .Avoid wasting time with people who are no march of you.it's better to stay in professional circle and give less time to others.Lastly I wish u a quick bounce back and I believe u 'll exploit new skills with in those six games.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless u.
Hasheem pigana kiume hakuna kushindwa mpaka ukubali mwenyewe!
ReplyDeleteJipe moyo mkuu, utarudi tena kwa nguvu ili uweze kuwakata vidomo domo wanaochonga mpaya.

Hashim, wabongo wote tunakupenda sana, hasa sie tunaokupiga madongo ndo tunakutakia mema zaidi maana tunakupa machungu kuzidi kukaza. Ukifanya vyema sifa ya nchi NZIMA.Ukisema bado unapata the SAME CHEQUE inaonesha jinsi gani ulivyoridhika mapema, kwa level ya NBA unaweza kulipwa zaidi ya mara KUMI ya hizo unazopata sasa kwa mwaka....http://sportige.com/2009-2010-biggest-contracts/
ReplyDeleteKAZA BUTI......Uje utujengee mahospitali kama MUTOMBO.
Bongo njaa kali huku...
liked Hasheem and saw this whole thing as a mistake that he can work on but after his comments on this article I think my opinion on his is going down with lack of diplomacy. You should nto be intimidating people and having a negative opinion just have positive thought and energy. look at tiger and all celebribrities they try gain fans back after disapointments and not intimidate them and loose even more fans.
ReplyDeleteDon't say "HATERS" and what not....the people you call haters are "WELL TO DO, WE HAVE OUR PHDs-and WE ARE IN THE WEST- and the world treats us rightly, CONSTANTLY, we do not depend on our performance on the basketball court or how WE WAKE UP TOMORROW...our education and academic works TAKES CARE OF EVERYTHING....and this is what Hasheem should be looking for and not LOOKING AT HIS HEIGHT AND MUSCLES.............TANZANIANS!!, WAKE UP!!...YOUR HEROES ARE THE LEARNED ONES AND NOT THESE BASKETBALLERS OR RAPPERS.....AND TOO BAD..YOU DO NOT REALIZE THAT....
ReplyDeleteAll the best!
SAME PAYCHECK? hilo ndilo linalotuponza watanzania......MASIKINI AKIPATA....

All the best Hasheem;
ReplyDeleteHASHEEM POLE SANA DOGO ILA KAZA BUTI UTAFIKA TU....USHAURI WANGU NI KUWA FANYA MAZOEZI KWA SANA, ACHANA NA FACEBOOK, KILA NIKILOGIN KWENYE FACE BOOK UPO ONLINE UNACHAT, SASA MAZOEZI UNAFNAY SAA NGAPI??FACEBOOK INAWAPOTEZA WATU WENGI SANA HASA HUKU USA AMBAKO INTERNET NI CHEAP, SIKU HIZI MTU ANASPEND HOURS ON FACEBOOK, AKICHAT NA KUANGALIA UMBEA, INSTEAD OF KUJISOMEA OR DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE, BE CAREFUL GUYS HASA HASA WAKINA DADA...FACEBOOK NI ADICTION YA AJABU SANA, MSIPOANGALIA HATUTAENDELEA...ACHANENI NA FACEBOOK JAMANI, FANYENI KILICHOWAPELEKA HUKO MAJUU...HAYA!!
ReplyDeleteHashim what do you mean when you said your excited, you should be disappointed! As a big brother I will tell you that you need to give a deep thought for this experience, something is not right!after this you have a lot to show, you are under radar everyone is watching and listen so be careful to what you do and say. Some like I still get the "same check" it should not be your concern right now! because trust me, that can dry in a second. Again take this as a wake up call, they want you to produce not running you mouth son!

IT WAS JUST FINE FOR HIM TO SAY NOTHING RATHER THAN VOMITTING THE WORDS HE VOMITTED, NOT ALL PEOPLE LIKE HIM, KUNA WATU WATAKUENDEA MLINGOTINI BAGAMOYO TO BRING YOU DOWN HAYO MAMBO YAPO MDOGO WANGU
ReplyDeleteEti "HATERS", lol!!!!
ReplyDeleteHashimu Thabiti mdogo wangu hakuna haters hapa. Umenielewa dogo?
Nimeangalia games ambazo ulipewa minutes kucheza. Nimengalia statistics zako kwenye NBA.COM ama ESPN.COM. Nafikiri unahitaji kubadilika kitabia. Quality ya game yako when compared to majivuno uyatoayo kwenye mahojiano kwa kweli haviendani kabisa. Angalia team-mate wako Rudy Gay, ama my buddy OJ Mayo; Je umewaona kwenye magazeti wakijibu watu kunya kama wewe mtoto wa Sinza unavyojibu? Angalia 18th draft pick wa mwaka wako anayechezea Denver Nuggets (Ty Lawson) anavyo-hustle. Don't you believe that you were overrated and now Grizzler's management has come to its sense and decided to give you the second chance by sending you to the demoted league?

- Work ethic

- Explosiveness
- Frail frame
- Mobility
- Size for position

Kama nilivosema mwanzoni, kaza buti kijana. Sote tunakutakia mafanikio kwenye NBA. Ni aibu kwetu sote tunapoona mtanzania mwenzetu hapewi minutes kwenye gemu. Chapa kazi bwana.
We love you bwana mdogo.
jaribu kujishusha kidogo na mungu atakuinua maana kumbuka ulisema mafaiko yako hayakutokana na mtu mwingine yeyote ni nguvu zako kumbuka mungu asipokupa kibali utaishia kupokea the same check ?????? watakutema ,chunga mdomo wako maana ulimi unaumba,,alafu mshirikishe mungu kwenye mafaniko yako wewe huwezi kwa nguvu zako mwenyewe
ReplyDeleteThink of 'haters' as people that can only have 'tough love' to give you and everything will be good. Maana yake ni kwamba you need to make up for lost time. Fanya mazoezi kuzidi wenzio and you will reach your potential. Ukiwa hivyo you will get where you want to be.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, NEVER talk about money. You must play for the love of the game and the money will follow you.
We wishi you success!
Tatizo lako Hasheem waleta ubitozi nyangema kwa game inataka mwanamme mwenye pumzi.Swallow ur pride and do what you do best.We want action sio porojo kama we unaweza game.
ReplyDeletehuyu jamaa hasheem atachochea haters wazidi kumchukia.....yani jinsi anavyo wajibu...duh eti 'im still getting the same cheque' (ni kama juisifia bado anoyo hela) sawa bwana. mi nilikuwa nampenda dogo sasa kama yeye unakua na time ya kujibishna na ma haters like that badala ya kupandisha game lake ili haters wasionge....its very sad.
Let start by saying 'this kid was blessed" but he missed he opportunity.I was among the basketball player back in 80s and 90s. Those days we taught discipline and respect from our still living the god-father of Tanzania basketball Hassan Kange, Saleh Zonga, Abdalah Aboud, Majura,Mwaiseba, Mahesa-RIP, Serve Malai-RIP, and Kimario-RIP. Okay, this kid doesnt know few names I have throw out there! He disrepect many basketball god-fathers when he visited home and he was living in the bubble and having photo opportunity that all he did.I follow this kid and he needs to grow mentally and professionally.I think his coach observed that from him and they decided to transfer him as wake up call. Second, he needs to come back home and listen the people who played this game back in 80s and 90s for advise.

ReplyDeleteHasheem anahitaji mshauri. Ukiongelea wabaya wako inaonekana wameweza kukugusa; so you give them undue recognition. Usiwape hao mwanya wowote.
Hiyo sentence yako inafana na aliyotoa Dioff Msenegali anayecheza UK, very arrogant young man.
NBA is blood competitive, hamna lele mama pale, Unlike college kuna "seven footers" kibao, I mean watu wa kimo chako chako ambao wameshiba kinoma Pound mia tatu na hamsini kwenda juu. We unajua kuliko mimi ila wakiweka Upaja rim hauioni au uongo? Ndo maana una less than 3 points per game.
Kama ndo hivyo ndugu yangu unatakiwa ukaze msuli. Ile shoo off uliyofanya last kwenda kutembea bongo badala ya kutafuta personal trainer ujinoe kwa ajili ya Season ulichemsha sana. Halafu naskia ukiwa Dar unakandya watu wa BATA kuwa hawajakusaidia, you could have just remained silent. Haina maana kutukana wakunga saa hizi kaka. Huo ni ushauri wa bure.
Sasa basi baada ya kujifua utafute mtu wa public relations kukusaidia, hii biashara ya kutukana mashabiki kuwa ni HATERS haikufikishi mbali, it will haunt you one day, big time.
Kila la kheri, tuliza kipago uchape kazi
Hasheem should understand that his team wanted to trade him and no one in the NBA was ready to accept him. What does that mean?
ReplyDeleteDo you (Hasheem) compare yourself with other rookies........there are several second round picks who are performing very well in the league, while you are struggling. And we want you do well in the D-League, otherwise you are going to be a looser. No hater man, just be a grown up and work hard with your team to gain trust and improve performance......
If you are in the NBA for money.......you are in the wrong place because after 2 years, your contract will expire and guess what next to you....?
My advise use this time to finish your degree.
NDUGU YETU HASHEEM KUMBUKA MATUKIO MBALIMBALI YA KUKUTIA MOYO KATIKA KUCHAGULIWA KWAKO KWENDA NBA. Dear Hasheem,
ReplyDeleteOngea kama mtu aliyeenda college. Read the comments and understands what people are saying. Very few haters here.
Uko mayai na unatakiwa ukaze msuli. Kazania mazoezi sana acha starehe na kujishaua. Kumbuka unawakilisha kijiji na hapa i mean nchi! pambaf
Wadau,
Naomba tuyaweke mambo yafuatayo katika mada;
Inawezekana kabisa Hasheem akawa anatumika kusave different purpose than playing basketball.
Mnadhani tena sasa kwa nini watu tulio USA tunamuita huyu mtoto loser.
ReplyDeleteHe said anapata check, kwanza hebu tufunje funje how much is getting paid now. almost $5M/yr, uncle Sam mwaka huu anachukua 32+% off that is for him to keep. Walio mtoa Kenya kumleta hapa ni white so no doubt wamekula not less than 20% of you're first two years salary. At the end amenunua nyumba sijui nini huko Mephins.... sasa do the math, na contract yako inaisha mwakani. You're Idiot with capital I.
Jana umepewa dakika ngapi kucheza? 18 minutes na umekamata mipira 2 as RPG. na point 8, sasa kama ligi ya chekechea unacheza kama mgonjwa you think you will come back to Mephins? I believe utarudi NBA but if you will make $0.5 of a million will be miracle.... be careful young man, dont try to be something that your not.....
Mdau wa Chicago
Why worry about a paycheque instead of what you bring to the court, what you represent? etc? Why.... I think this guy never got it, and he never will.... Child stick to what you can do best, school go back and finish university.
ReplyDeleteTatizo letu sie watu weusi ni kupenda kujionyesha tuna pesa sanaaa ndio maana amesema hvyo, Hasheem kumbuka hiyo inayokutokea hapo ni AIBU kubwa yaani badala useme tu vitu vya kawaida wewe unaingiza pesa?? really ?? I mean really?? na je hiyo paycheck isiporudi utasema nini? acha kunyea kambi bwamdogo, aliyekupa wewe ndio aliotunyima sie.
ReplyDeleteby the way you lost me as a fan, i hope you stay there (Dlegue) forever.
Hashim, for your own good FIRE YOUR PR TEAM, manake wanahitaji kukuelekeza vitu vya kusema na vya kufanya and so far they are not doing any good job.
ReplyDeleteHashim usijione umepata, jaribu kuchunga maneno yako. I totally lost my respect in you.
ReplyDeletewith this attitude you will never get anywhere bro.

Chunga mdomo wako.
Kibaya zaidi anaonyesha kukasirika watu wakitoa hoja zao, well, si uliutaka umaarufu? wakati unapokelewa ulifurahia basi ndio maishau yategemee haya, kila utakachofanya utafuatiliwa.
ReplyDeleteMdau wa chicago
ReplyDeleteUmetuchekesha sana hahaha hashim hana wa kumlaumu ila yeye mwenyewe na akifanya mchezo nafasi itamtoka hivi hivi manake watasema tulimpa chansi nyingi hakujirekebisha.

ReplyDeleteHashim, hapo ulipo hata kubadilisha timu kama nguo huwezi halafu unaongea mambo kama haya. waone wenzio kina iverson maneno kidogo ni vitendo tu wewe hata jina bado hujaliweka sawa unanyea kambi. unaonyesha kuwa kimekuuma watu wanavyokucheka, zidi kwenda kwenye facebook na twitter zitakufikisha mbali sana.
"It’s a new saga that has started. Plus I’m still be getting the same cheque… it’s not like they are not gonna pay me the usual".
ReplyDeleteHIS WORDS, NOT MINE.

Watu hao hao wanageukageuka.Watu wengi hapa wanajua kucheza basketball ya mdomoni. All the best Hasheeem.
ReplyDeleteDr Mallaba
ReplyDeleteHuyu hashim ni super star huko bongo tu huku ulaya hakuna anaemjua wanauliza mara tatu tatu. Umempa ushauri mzuri ila tu lazima ajue maisha huenda juu na kushuka chini.
Michuzi jiunge basi na twitter tukufuate kila siku, popote utakapokuwa una tu elezea matukio.
ReplyDeleteGoo job na hii michuzi blog.
Ni "DHAMBI KUBWA" kutoa reference kwa Kobe Bryant ili kukupa fundisho ndugu yetu Hashimu kwa sababu you are nowhere close to his level; Ila kwa kukusaidia kidogo embu angalia namna Kobe Bryant alivyojibu swali la waandishi wa habari leo jioni baada ya kupata 3 shots in 17 attempts kwenye ushindi dhidi ya Dencer Nuggets pale Staples Center. Maybe itakusaidia na wewe kujifunza survival skills in NBA. Soma hapa chini:
ReplyDelete“God knows I love the triangle (offense), but I kind of had to get into a playoff mode a little bit today — just put the ball in my hands and let me make the decisions. But I missed a lot of shots,” Bryant said. “My jumper was off. So I’ve got to get back in and work on it so it’s consistent again, after being off for a long time.”
why are you saying "HATERS?"you hashimu? please take these comments as challenges to make you play harder, you r our tanzania hero u know!so whichever comes in your way we hv to take it seriously
ReplyDeleteso dont be like mafisadi kwa maneno ayo,we dont want to see yu like watu wa vijembe/ushankuna nk,,,doesn't suit you,be cool n we need you up there our proudly boy
wish you luck n come back to NBA again,,,now i understand what is D-league
my prayer to you
Kweli kuna Watanzania wengi ma-haters. Hawapendi watu wafanikiwe; na wakifanikiwa wanawatakia mabaya. TZ tunaongoza kwa PHDs (Pull him down syndrome). Envious people will always be losers. Hashim will bounce back and you will grieve and continue being more misearable and full of hatred.
ReplyDeletenarudi tena umu

jamani kwani imekuwaje huyo mtu kashuka daraja hivyo ghafla? mi mbona naona mauzauza mliokeen na mambo ya NBA mtupe somo,
ReplyDeletekwa wengi mliotoa maoni naona kama kulaumu kumekuwa kwingi hakuna aliyetaka kujua chanzo zaidi ya kushutumu tu maneno aliyotoa thabit, which inaweza kuprove kuna element za kuhate ndani yake,as for mtu aliyesema bendera yetu haitabebwa na rappers na basketball players think again, ameongea kuhusu paycheck akiwa na maana kwa sasa he is still on the track kwa hiyo kuna possibility ya kurudi hiyo team aliyopo,
heh jamani i still cant believe hizi comments nyingi mbaya zimetoka mioyoni mwetu
Gudluck Hasheem piga kazi utatoka tu kama sio memphis kuna timu nyingi bado nafikiri zinakutolea macho.
Just a piece of advice Hasheem usiwe na hasira na usipende kuongea na media...prove people wrong by working hard to come back to NBA,and when u do please say nothing just thank God for whatever comes. Usiridhike na ulipofika kwani hakutakufikisha mbali. All the best
ReplyDeleteNaogopa kufikiria kwamba wanaotoa comments za kumkatisha tamaa Hasheem ni watanzania, I have to believe that they are not Tanzanians. ALL I CAN SAY TO HASHEEM IS THIS, "WE (REALLY TANZANIANS) ARE WITH U, PIGA MZIGO WE WANT TO SEE U BACK KWENYE NBA. HATERS ARE THERE TO STAY KAMA ALIVYOSEMA MTU HAPO JUU, IGNORE THEM DO UR THING MAN! U HAVE OUR SUPPORT AND WE LOVE U!"

ReplyDeleteDANI
"jamani kwani imekuwaje huyo mtu kashuka daraja hivyo ghafla?"
ReplyDeleteBasically; he was playing very poorly in the NBA. Since his game was below average, trading him wasn't an option as no team would pick up a rookie that can't play. So the only option was to demote him to the D-League.
Good luck Hasheem, wish you all the best.
God bless Huyu kijana.
