FINLAND HAPPY WITH TANZANIA'S FIGHT AGAINST GRAFT, ZANZIBAR'S RECONCILIATION
THE FINISH Prime Minister Hon. Matti Vanhanen has expressed satisfaction on
the progress made on political reconciliation in Zanzibar and congratulated
the Government of Tanzania in fighting against corruption.

This is contained in a joint communique issued today (Wednesday March 17,
2010) at the end of a four-day official visit to Tanzania by Hon. Vanhanen.

The communique said the two Prime Ministers exchanged views on the
forthcoming General Elections and the fight against corruption.

“Hon. Vanhanen was satisfied on the progress made on political
reconciliation in Zanzibar and congratulated Hon. Pinda and the Government
of Tanzania in fighting against corruption and that the two Prime Ministers
emphasized the need to intensify war against corruption and enhance good
governance and the rule of law.”

The communique said the two Prime Ministers expressed their satisfaction at
excellent relations between the two countries and underscored the need to
strengthen development cooperation and “effectively utilize the resources
aimed at poverty eradication”.

Development assistance from Finland is mainly focused on regional and local
development, forestry, environment and natural resources as well as General
Budget Support.

The Communique added that, recognizing the importance of regional peace and
security, the two Prime Ministers exchanged views on the situation
pertaining in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Darfur and Somalia,
and undertook to continue working together to find lasting solution to the
problems of the region.

Hon. Vanhanen arrived in Tanzania on Sunday (March 14,2010) and on Monday
(March 15, 2010) visited the Manyara and Ngorongoro National Parks, where he
witnessed the significant work that Tanzania has done in the conservation of
natural resources.

Yesterday (March 16, 2010), the two Prime Ministers held Ofiicial Talks and
discussed various issues of mutual interest at bilateral, regional and
international levels. Later the Finnish Prime Minister paid a courtesy call
on President Kikwete at the State House.

Hon. Vanhanen inaugurated the Dar es Salam Institute of Sustainable
Development, at Coco Beach in Dar es Salaam. The Institute is jointly run by
Tanzania and Finland.

At a news conference at the airport just before departure to South Africa,
Hon. Vanhanen said his country will continue to support Tanzania’s
development efforts and praised the country’s commitment to the conservation
of natural resources.

The Prime Minister, Hon. Pinda has accepted the invitation to visit Finland
at a date to be agreed later.
