Deputy Mayor of Ilala Hon. Jerry Slaa attends an OECD Urban Roundtable for Mayors and Ministers in Paris, France, this morning.
The global recession and continued concern over climate change have called into question the ability of the current model for economic growth to foster long-term prosperity. The OECD is currently developing a global Green Growth Strategy that will identify policies and approaches that can shift production and consumption towards a clean, low-carbon and sustainable economy. With the world’s urban population having surpassed the symbolic 50% threshold, cities play an increasingly important role in meeting this challenge.

The third annual meeting of the OECD Urban Roundtable for Mayors and Ministers today will build upon previous debates to explore strategies to stimulate urban green growth and investment. Despite progress made, serious challenges remain. Cities, in cooperation with regional and national governments, need to develop integrated strategies that support the growth of the new green sectors, through inter alia incentives and regulatory changes, while managing possible adjustment costs due to evolving economic conditions at the regional, national and international levels.

The 2010 Urban Roundtable, in collaboration with the Club of Madrid and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, will allow major stakeholders to debate and discuss current best practices and identify knowledge gaps in urban green growth strategies being organised. The Roundtable will bring together ministers, mayors, regional leaders as well as eminent personalities from the Club of Madrid (former Head of States and governments) and leaders from large international companies to identify a common policy agenda for cities’ contribution to a global Green Growth Strategy
