TANESCO – WHERE IS LAW & ORDER?
WHERE IS THE DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM OF SPEECH?
Its is regretfully more than a year since I have complained in regards to power problems and phase tripping at 870 mfaume road. This complaint was reported to the Past Ilala Regional Manager Mr. Richard Nsulau, Ilala Emergency Engineer and Customer Relations Manager of Tanesco. I had been promised that something would be done soon.
This problem had started since we got a new 10 + 4 storey building in our neighborhood on mfaume road. This building has 2 flats on each floor and is equipped with more than 3 air conditioners per flat, geysers, washing machines, sophisticated modern electronic devices, elevators etc. If we look at the building as a whole it has more than 42 air conditioners, minimum of 28 washing machines, minimum of 28 geysers and so forth.
According to the Tanzanian law this building is supposed to have a transformer of its own, which should cater and provide electricity to this building from the main line that is coming from the Ilala Substation but unfortunately due to our corrupt Tanesco officials this building has been given access to the transformer that was designed for a few small flats in Mazengo and Mfaume road.
Due to this new building’s connection and high load intake we face phase tripping daily in the evenings. If the owner has the capacity to build such a huge structure then can’t he afford to arrange for a transformer? Or he has been misled by some officials who look for their own advantages?
When the phase trips this building (which is supported by a day and night standby generator and caters for all the above load) switches to generator mode while we wait for Ilala Emergency team to come maybe after an hour or two at times when the new shift comes they tackle the complaint thus leave us and our families to suffer for hours. Is this fair?
Lately we have had instances when the phase trips more than once and upto 4 times in the same night due to overload to the transformer. This problem has also caused our electronic appliances to burn out and get damaged. Who is responsible and who will pay for them? Tanesco or the new building owners?
We have pre paid power (LUKU) which serves us the right to have the power unless there is a major and acceptable problem in the substation or the national grid.
I have sent my complaint many times to Tanesco and had also reported this issue through a friend of mine to The Express newspaper who tried to interview the customer relation officer as per my information but my matter and complaint wasn’t printed in the media as Tanesco gives good advertising business to some popular newspapers therefore the media does not write anything against Tanesco and people like us continue to suffer and be bullied by Tanesco.
Where is our freedom of speech and where is the democracy?
Most of you who are reading this are parents, I have small children who go to schools and need good sleep so that they are fresh at school. Lately I had been called by my child’s teacher asking me the reason why my child is sleepy in school. My child’s performance is also affected by this problem. It is indeed a shame for parents to hear such things but this is a result of the power problems especially at its peak around 7pm onwards and resumes normally when the Tanesco technicians decide. In such a state can a child sleep in hot weather of dar es salaam and lately upanga area is infested with mosquitos?
I have complained many times but nothing has been done. The best thing Tanesco can do now is to disconnect this building until they are installed with their own transformers meanwhile their generator will support them and let us live in peace now. If required I can arrange for a signed petition from all the neighbors who are suffering from this building’s existence.
I shall appreciate if this matter is considered positively and solved amicably.

This is what I call poor planning on the side of government. When the permit to erect this structure was approved, all these power and other infrastructure requirements should have been known and catered for.
ReplyDeleteHowever, our government organs work independent entities and their only concern is how much they can benefit in form of kick backs and other materials benefits, the community at large and society's welfare are almost non-existent in their minds.
Please keep up fighting for your right and your efforts will bear fruits one day. We need to reach a point and put a stop to this kind of planning and inconsieration for the society at large. Even though I dont live at your area, I would still be willing to sign the petition for social welfare purposes especially on what your small kids are going through. I can also imagine how hard it is for them to do their homework with such disruption.....!
We can live in this country as though we are living in the stone age, even some of these Tanesco officials should be made accountable especially the ones that you have reported to and have never bothered to give you feedback. Who do they think they are there to serve? The sooner we get rid of this Monopoly power business the better, can't they learn the hard lessons that TTCL and ATC are still learning while strugling. I wish this could happen tomorrow that they are in competition and start loosing customers because of their disregard for customers.....!

ReplyDeleteDear my Sad friend, The Power problem in Dar es salaam, especially city center is bigger than just a new 10+ storey building getting its own transformer. How many such buildings are being erected daily in Dar? take your time and do the count! all these buildings are designed to operate with Aircons without any natural ventilation provision. have you seen any plan to increase Power Plants to match the demand?? Nothing!!!! You better arrange to petition the whole Energy Ministry and ofcourse the entire government for lacking this basic mentality! To do yourself some favor, just buy yourself a little generator and move on. Some problems are bigger and deeper then just a few Tanesco corrupt officials.

Tanesco wezi mafisadi hakuna kazi pesa ni mbele kuliko service wakti huu wa uchaguzi ni wanawalipisha wannchi bei kubwa ili tu wapate pesa za uchaguzi kwani kila idara wanmafungu yao ya kutowa. Tangu lini mfanyakazi anhitajika kulika mamilioni kwenye nyumba ya kuishi kisa umeme. Pole wananchi kwa kukosa umeme safari hii unauwezo wa kuendelea na hilo tataizo au kulifanyia kazi kwa voti yako. Michuzi usibanie hawa jamaa, kama wameshindwa kazi wawaaachie wengine lakini sisi wananchi hatustahili kunyanyaswa kwenye mitaa yetu na nchi yetu sisi weyewe.
