Arusha. The Tanzania Labour Party (TLP) councillor for Sokoni One Ward, Mr Michael Kivuyo, has resigned as deputy mayor of Arusha City Council in a move that adds to the unfolding drama following last month’s controversial mayoral elections.

The civic leader announced the resignation yesterday at a media briefing during which he was accompanied by officials form the opposition party in the region.

He said he had made the decision to step aside from the position to allow for the holding of proper elections in the municipality. The move comes only days after police clashed with Chadema supporters in the city, leading to the deaths of three youths.

Mr Kivuyo was picked as deputy mayor in the elections on December 18 that saw the CCM candidate chosen as mayor. Chadema has since termed the elections illegal and wants them repeated. Wednesday’s public protest that turned ugly was to drum up support for a repeat.

Yesterday the TLP councillor said he had been perturbed by the reigning political uncertainty in Arusha and condemned police brutality on members of the public on Wednesday.

“I can’t betray fellow Arusha residents as it is clear that the election that gave me this position was not free and fair,” he said. He said that after the events that transpired recently there was no way a credible leader like him could continue in his post.

He added that prior to the violence, he had unsuccessfully sought help from the Arusha regional commissioner, Mr Isidory Shirima, to call a meeting to hold fresh polls.

TLP regional chairman Leonard Makanzo asked the minister for Internal Affairs, Mr Shamsi Vuai Nahodha, and the Inspector General of Police, Mr Said Mwema, to resign.

  2. Ankal,
