Happy New Year and welcome to the first DCMA concert in 2011 - two jazz and fusion student groups from Norway (AdLiB) and Zanzibar (Swahili Vibes) will present their work on Wednesday, 12th of January (Mapinduzi Day) at 8 pm at DCMA, Customs House on the waterfront of Stone Town.

In Stavanger, Norway, four accomplished instrumentalists have an ear for tasty melodies, funky grooves and spicy harmonies, this is the band: a different kind of jazz orchestra, whose expression ranges from beautifully quiet to ecstatically crazy, and emphasizes everything in between – tied together by rhythms that, at worst, cause sporadic outbreaks of uncontrollable dancing. Is it jazz? Is it funk? Is it fusion, progressive, rock, world or pop? It’s not always easy to tell, but it’s certainly filled with enthusiasm, life, seriousness and humour.
The four young musicians from Norway are meeting with local musicians in Zanzibar and in Bagamoyo Swahili Vibes Early 2009 saw the birth of a new and exciting group formed by eight of the most talented students of Zanzibar's Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA). They write and compose their own lyrics and of music and perform using a variety instruments.
Swahli Vibes are now spearheading the renaissance of a spicy brand of music fusion, mixing acoustic instruments such as qanun, oud, cello, tabla, ngoma, djembe and bongos with western electric instruments. We hope to see you there!
Many good wishes
DCMA Team
