Last week, PUM Netherlands senior experts signed an agreement with The Institute for Information Technology (IIT) based in Dar es Salaam The impressive ceremony was witnessed by PUM and IIT officials. The PUM team was led by Mr. Wim Hazenberg who is a country coordinator for Tanzania and IIT delegation was led by Mr. Moiz Salemwalla who is the Programme Director.

PUM’s VEHICLE programme

With the VEHICLE programme (Vocational Education for Higher Categories and Levels) PUM aims to improve the quality of education. With better education more graduates will be able to meet the needs of local businesses. The project will run for a period of two years.

PUM is supporting IIT by helping them prepare an adequate and practical oriented curriculum.

Best way forward As Country Coordinator Wim Hazenberg explains: “The industry needs well educated people that are able to work on a higher level. Supporting small and medium sized enterprises, which generate a big percentage of the employment within a country, is the best way forward.” One representative of PUM, Mr. Steve Akwera, is providing assistance locally to companies or schools interested in the PUM Programme.

Wim Hazenberg gave a speech during the ceremony in which he explained more about the cooperation: “When I talked to the management of IIT the first time more than a year ago, I soon realised that this organisation was very much willing to grow, not only in the number of students but also in the quality of the education. And now, during this visit, I still feel the same drive, the same enthusiasm that was there the first time.

It is very important to keep that spirit, because passion is very important especially in education. Since passion is also of great importance in the PUM organisation, I feel we will make a good team.

Not only IIT and their students will benefit from the cooperation, but also the companies that work together with IIT and hire people that studied at IIT. Through transfer of knowledge this project will bridge the gap between the curriculum and industry requirements”
