Amb. Liberata Mulamula takes great lakes media to the front lines

In her efforts to curb illegal exploitation of natural resources in the Great Lakes region, the Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Ambassador Liberata Mulamula has now considered media as an effective partner in fighting the vice.

Not that the ICGLR has all the while not been engaging the media to cover its activities, rather this time around the Amb. Mulamula has vowed to take along committed  journalists and media houses in the region straight to the front lines. 

ICGLR's  Secretariat and officials from Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs met with journalists from the region early this week in Nairobi and resolved to fully engage the media effectively in implementing the six tools as proposed by the regional leaders in the fight against exploitation of natural resources in Zambia early last year.

The tools include regional certification mechanism, harmonization of national legislation, regional database on mineral flaws, formalization of the artisanal mining sector, promotion of the extractive industry transparency initiative and whistle blowing mechanism.

Journalists from the region will soon be meeting to deliberate on how they should include these six  vital rules in their work.
