The Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Dr Asha Rose Migiro received in her office on July 13th, 2011 the ICGLR Executive Secretary, Ambassador Liberata Mulamula who had come to pay a courtesy call.
The main purpose of Ambassador Mulamula's visit was to brief her on how far the organization has gone since the Special Summit on the illegal exploitation of natural resources in the Great Lakes Region held in Zambia in December 2010.
In her remarks, the ICGLR Head said that her visit was also motivated by the need to formalizing relations and develop strategies for collaboration between the UN and regional organizations.
She further informed Dr Migiro that the Group of ambassadors of the 11 countries of the Great Lakes Regions would be putting “the fight against the illegal exploitation of natural resources in the Great Lakes Region” on the agenda of the 2nd committee on the Economic and Social Council.
Moreover, Ambassador Mulamula briefed the UN Deputy SG on the preparations of the forthcoming ICGLR Summit that will take place in Kampala in December which has a special session on Sexual Gender Based Violence in the Great Lakes Region.
The whole idea behind having it as a Special Session, she said, is to ensure that people of the Great Lakes Region are part of finding the solution to their own problem. The Special Session will also provide an opportunity for Member States to jointly develop a strategy for preventing and ending violence against women.
In her turn, Dr Migiro said that SGBV fits well into the eight priority areas of the Secretary General for this year and that could be certainly an area that they will support. She suggested that the ICGLR organize this Summit using a multi-sectoral approach to ensure maximum participation of all stakeholders.
"That will then facilitate the implementation of the ICGLR Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region", said Dr Migiro.
