Saturday September 17th, 2011 will be a special day for the people of Pangani. It will be the premiere screening of “Chukua Pipi” (Sweet Deceit).
This is a fiction film supported by the American people as part of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The film was produced by the local NGO UZIKWASA (Uzima kwa Sanaa) in collaboration with Tanzanian film professionals, Pangani village actors, theatre professionals from University of Dar es Salaam and TaSUBA Bagamoyo, and Tanzanian music professionals.
The renowned team of Chande Omar of Zanzibar (film Director) and Dr. Augustine Hatar (Producer) of University of Dar es Saalam showed their talent once again after having worked with UZIKWASA in 2006 in the production of the award winning film “Fimbo ya Baba”.
It is UZIKWASA’s strong belief that change can only be achieved through programs that are grounded in the communities. Hence the new film “Chukua Pipi” is based on true stories originating in Pangani District and portraying the socio-cultural context of rural Pangani.
The main film themes have been developed from the results of a behavioural study (2007/2008) that looked at factors which contribute to the spread of HIV and AIDS in Pangani. The film is part of a larger rural behaviour change campaign that is being implemented by UZIKWASA in the District.
Sexual abuse and violence; early sexual activity, gender inequalities, roles of parents and local leaders are among the campaign themes that the film addresses.
“Chukua Pipi” is about rural Pangani. It tells many stories about the lives of people in the District. The film builds towards a mesmerizing conclusion when these separate stories merge into one gripping drama in which all individuals face their own personal challenge. The film premiere will be a public open air event in the historical town of Pangani on Saturday September 17th, 2011 at the Boma.
A cultural program will start at 1:00 pm and will end with the film showing at 6:30 pm. The representative from USAID will be the HIV/AIDS Project Management Specialist, Grey Saga. Other USG government representatives will include James Yates, the PEPFAR Media Coordinator.
Among expected government representatives are the Chairperson of TACAIDS Dr. Fatma Mrisho, the Pangani District Commissioner Hon. Zipporah Pangani, and many more representatives of local government and private institutions. Several thousand Pangani residents are also expected to attend the launch of “their” film.
UZIKWASA is a non-governmental organization whose focus is on empowering Pangani communities to improve their lives through driving their own development agenda and facilitating local level changes within its program areas.
These are: HIV/AIDS and Community Health, Culture, and Communication and Partnership Building. UZIKWASA’s innovative work includes developing popular model approaches for community empowerment using participatory methods such as theatre for development, culturally relevant films, radio drama and interactive radio programs. In collaboration with the people of Pangani UZIKWASA recently established Pangani’s own community radio station Pangani FM.
