Four Tanzanian Biotechnology experts from the Government of Tanzania will attend an international conference on agricultural biotechnology sponsored by the American people through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in collaboration with Brazil. The conference will take place from September 20-September 21, 2011 in Accra, Ghana.
The United States of America and Brazil have agreed to work on tri-lateral biotechnology outreach in Africa and to organize this workshop to bring together 60 participants from Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda, and expert speakers from the U.S. and Brazil.
The participants include government officials, academics, researchers, and representative of international organizations that focus on agriculture and biotechnology issues.
The issues for discussion at the conference will include biotechnology regulation; potential areas for collaboration; biotechnology for improving productivity and cultivation; and issues of biotechnology and the environment; development, land use, and the use of pesticides and erosion.
The Tanzanian delegation will be headed by Dr. Nicholas E. Nyange from the Tanzanian Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), and will include Dr. Flora Ismail of the Department of Botany University of Dar es Salaam; Dr. Gabriel Mkilema Shirima from the Central Veterinary Laboratory Ministry of of Livestock Development and Fisheries; and Dr. Fred Tairo from the Mikocheni Agricultural Research Institute (MARI) Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dar es Salaam.
