BUGANDO NOW FULLY-FLEDGED UNIVERSITY

The former, Weill Bugando University College of Health Sciences (WBUCHS), now has become a full-fledged university named, Catholic University of Health & Allied Sciences – Bugando (CUHAS-Bugando). It is the declaration made by the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) in 1994 marks the initial thought to establish a Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences at Bugando (CUHAS-Bugando).

The Decision to establisha medical school was based on the need for the Catholic Church to contribute to the training of more professionals in the country’s health sector. The School was established as a Constituent College of the Saint Augustine University of Tanzania in the name of the Bugando University College of Health Sciences; later named as the Weill Bugando University College of Health Sciences. The Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences- Bugando (CUHAS-Bugando) therefore replaces the Weill Bugando University College of Health Sciences and becomes the second university of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference.

The University retains its location in the premises of the Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) in Mwanza. Its location at BMC remains most appropriate because this 870-bed teaching, referral, and consultant hospital also belongs to the Catholic Church, and serves about one third of country’s population. It provides space and faculty for clinical training of its students with the six regions of Tanzania around Lake Victoria providing the catchments area.
