ReplyDeleteKagame, Museveni upbeat on vital road link
ReplyDeleteBy East african News agency
Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda have commissioned the reconstruction of a highway linking the inland part of the Great Lakes region to the rest of East Africa and, subsequently, to the sea.
The reconstruction of the Mbarara-Katuna highway, which constitutes the last 124-km section of the Northern Corridor route, is funded by the European Union (EU).
Highlighting the importance of the road that links Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to the port of Mombasa, the two presidents said once completed, the highway shall facilitate the movement of goods and people and help strengthen grassroots ties between Uganda and Rwanda.
“We should be able to maintain this road ourselves and make sure it lasts and continues to serve us very well," the Ugandan leader underlined. "I am sure we are not expecting that we will be going back to the EU to seek for more funds to maintain it."
He asked Rwandans and Ugandans to make use of the highway to generate economic activities for individual prosperity.
Roberto Ridolfi, the head of the EU Delegation to Uganda, said the road will help promote regional integration within the East African Community (EAC) as well as nearby regional blocs.
He said the project would contribute to the reduction of transportation costs, unlock local production by small-scale producers in the region and improve road safety.
Rwanda’s Infrastructure Minister Albert Nsengiyumva said the rehabilitation of the road would significantly impact on the economic development of Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC.
“Due to the poor condition of the road, road user cost has increased by 15 percent, resulting in increases in the cost of products on the market,” he asserted.
At the same time the number of vehicles - especially heavy trucks ferrying import and export goods - that ply the Mbarara-Katuna highway had gone up to 2,900 vehicles per day as of June 2011.
The Northern Corridor Route forms part of the main international route connection Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo and runs from the Kenyan border through Kampala to the Rwandan border, a length of some 650 km.
The road is the country's most important road link, nationally and internationally.
The importance of the Northern Corridor Route for Uganda and its two neighbours has meant that the Government of Uganda and international development partners have continually worked devoted substantial resources to its upkeep and improvement
It is currently not in a proper state, and that is why reconstruction work was negotiated and launched to upgrade it and extend it to Kigali.
